CROSSING THE MIDLINE IS IMPORTANT

Activities to Help a Child Cross the Midline

Arts and crafts (coloring, drawing, threading, cutting, pasting, folding)
Learning a musical instrument that engages both hands (piano, violin or guitar)
Swimming
Martial arts (punching and kicking across the body)
Playing games like Twister or Simon Says
Marching like toy soldiers
Stretching and reaching (get child to reach as high as they can with their right hand and then try to touch as low as they can to their left toe)
Yoga (try Cosmic Kids)
Dancing (GoNoodle or You Tube are great)
Ribbons and streamers (make circles and patterns)
Hop scotch
Move like animals (crawl like a crab, bear walk, hop like a bunny, stand like a flamingo)
Draw figure eights on the ground (using chalk) or on a chalkboard (practicing on vertical surfaces adds another dimension)
Practice with zippers, buttons, shoelaces, snaps

this was 'borrowed' BUT super important!! the body position for 'learning' is important! sitting supported with good posture , especially for speech therapy, is important! Set your child up for success. Success in the lesson is the goal, not who wins the battle of where and with what (blankets/toys) to sit with 😄

I was preaching about this before COVID 19, I am sure it has gotten a lot worse. You are home more now, take advantage and PLAY WITH your children. You will never regret it, you will never look back and say, "I am sure glad my kids learned from me and we have a close relationship," instead of, "boy I am so glad that my kids still remember the Wiggles song."

Experts say parents can reduce the impact of screen time with young children by choosing educational programs and watching with children whenever possible.

wow! so important to why I am a Speech Therapist, and as a person who impacts communication skills. The purpose of communication is not to do well in school, it's to form relationships. First, and foremost, with our parents, siblings and friends. I help children communicate so they can say "I love you Mommy!" so they can make a friend on the play ground, and so they can tell you what they don't like, just as much as what they do! I pray that we all communicate to those around you that you love them, that you are happy they are in your life and that you won't feed them beets 😛because they don't like them.
