After collapsing in his bathroom, doctors diagnosed Bobby Smith with osteomyelitis of the thoracic vertebrae, a rare infection of the spine that causes the bone to weaken. After spinal surgery, Bobby spent three weeks recovering in the ICU before transitioning to Select Specialty Hospital - West Tennessee. There, a physician-led care team developed a personalized treatment plan to help Bobby recover from his spinal cord injury and get one step closer to returning home.

For those living with a spinal cord injury (SCI), most want to know how their quality of life will change.

Our teams are often asked:
“When can I resume doing what I love to do?”
“Will I be able to return to school or work?”

Through our personalized treatment plans for every SCI patient, our therapy and clinical teams create a foundation of skills to support the entire recovery journey. We focus on stretches, weight shifts in wheelchairs and joint range of motion exercises just to name a few. These skills help to set up our patients for achieving their recovery goals following injury.

This month, we’ll be highlighting our “Back to Basics” series, covering each care team member’s role in a SCI patient’s journey.

The OhioHealth Doctors Hospital Community Care Clinic is celebrating its one-year anniversary this summer! Since opening in July 2024, the healthcare team has treated more than 3,000 patients and made meaningful progress in serving individuals without an established doctor.

Offering walk-in services like routine primary care for adults and children, chronic disease management, vaccinations and more – the clinic aims to close care gaps in the surrounding community.

With the addition of this practice, there has been a 14% reduction in avoidable emergency department visits and 560+ patients are now seeing a dedicated primary care provider outside the clinic. ohlth.co/4mKrXdg

September marks Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Awareness Month. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, approximately 17,000 Americans acquire an SCI each year.

No two SCIs are the same, and a patient’s outcome can vary based on a number of factors, including the level of early intervention care and intensive rehabilitation.

Throughout SCI Awareness Month, we’ll be introducing a “Back to Basics” series, sharing information about SCI and how our care teams support patients as they work to recover as much function as possible.

This , meet OhioHealth therapy dog Weller – a 3 year-old golden doodle with a vivacious personality and a love for boosting morale on a ruff day! 🐾

He’s just one of the many therapy dogs who visit with our associates. For the past year and a half, Weller has been frequenting OhioHealth Doctors Hospital and attending nurse residency graduations to cheer on new medical professionals.

While he basks in the belly rubs, Weller is on a mission to make people smile, one pet at a time. And that’s a mission we fully support. 💙

Earlier this summer, Taylor Sexton hit the road bright and early to head to Myrtle Beach. Taylor, a surgery technician, was called into OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital late the night before for a trauma case – so she was tired and ready for caffeine. But before she could stop for coffee, she witnessed something that jolted her awake.

“I was driving down I-71 South about ten miles south of Mansfield when I saw a car hit the guard rail heading north,” said Taylor.

She immediately pulled over, called 911 and ran across the highway to help the driver.

“I got him out of his car,” she said. “He was fine, just kind of shaken up. But every car that was flying by on I-71 was hitting pieces of his car and they were flying everywhere.”

She suggested they move to her car to avoid getting hit by any pieces of debris – but they never had a chance.

“About the time I said that, a semi came and hit a part of his car and the guardrail,” said Taylor.

According to Taylor, the semi-truck soared off I-71, clearing State Route 546 below.

“It was just like a bright flash,” said she said. “And it was just smoking really bad.”

Again, Taylor jumped into action. She ran towards the wreck, calling 911 to alert them to the second crash. She cleared a fence and standing water before she could reach the truck on its side. Taylor then climbed through the windshield to get to the driver.

“He was scared,” said Taylor. “He struggled moving because he did something to his hip so he couldn't move very well.”

Taylor quickly got the driver out of his truck and began checking him out.

She stayed with the driver until EMS arrived to take him to Mansfield Hospital. Due to HIPAA regulations, she wasn’t able to find out his condition. But she still thinks about him often.

Taylor hopes the driver may come across this and reach out to let her know how he’s doing. Whether she ever hears from him or not, she feels confident she did everything she could to help him during such a terrifying moment.

Taylor’s story is a reminder of how our associates’ compassion and care for others extends beyond hospital walls. She will be honored at this weekend’s Columbus Crew match for her brave actions. 🤍

You may have heard the words “aphasia” and “dysphagia” when supporting a loved one’s health journey and wondered what they mean and how they differ.

June is National Aphasia Awareness Month—a fitting time to highlight this communication disorder and contrast it with dysphagia, another disorder patients may face after injury or illness.

Aphasia affects a person’s ability to speak, read or write—although not necessarily their thinking. After a stroke or brain injury that damages the language centers in the brain, a patient may have trouble finding the right words, understanding what others say or comprehending text.

Dysphagia is the difficulty in swallowing, and can occur as a symptom of many different conditions, including brain and muscle disorders.

Stroke recovery goals can look very different for each stroke survivor. Some simply want to stand or eat on their own. Others envision returning to work, travelling the world or reclaiming the role of family event planner. The most common goal among patients? Returning home.
