Spinal cord injuries (SCI) demand highly specialized care. At Select Medical specialty hospitals, an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists, and dietitians and others collaborate to address the complex challenges patients’ face – from blood pressure fluctuations and pain, to muscle loss, pressure sores and digestive issues that can lead to malnutrition.

“Good nutrition plays a supportive role in recovery,” said Camilla Johnson, clinical dietitian, Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation. She supports and educates patients with SCI during their rehabilitation. “In the hospital, good nutrition reduces the length of stay and … it enhances overall outcomes,” she said.

Here are four ways our dietitians contribute to patient care to promote healing and prevent complications.

Life changes with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Nurses play an important role in supporting patients with an SCI and their loved ones as they navigate their recovery journey.

As instrumental players on our physician-led multidisciplinary care team, nurses direct care and advocate for their patients’ physical and emotional needs as they recover and prepare to return home after rehabilitation.

Our Registered Nurses (RNs) provide 24-hour hands-on care, tending to a range of needs from administering medications to monitoring patients’ bowel and bladder functions to ensuring patients change position frequently to avoid pressure wounds. Nurses also reinforce therapy, helping patients put into practice exercises to strengthen deconditioned muscles and new ways of dressing and grooming.

Additionally, nurses offer emotional support to their patients with an SCI – problem-solving with them as they work through challenges. In preparation for discharge, nurses also ensure patients and their loved ones are aware of community resources to support their independence and well-being.

Patients living with spinal cord injury (SCI) can experience sensory challenges that inhibit mobility and create fall risks. Fall prevention education is a focus throughout the SCI rehabilitation journey by Select Medical specialty hospital teams, including physical therapists.

Physical therapists help educate individuals with SCI about fall risk by integrating safe mobility strategies early into their care plan. For instance, the introduction of any new equipment, such as a bed or wheelchair, increases the risk for falls. Fall prevention is also underscored in a comprehensive rehabilitation plan of care across disciplines to incorporate equipment that builds muscle strength, promotes balance and improves mobility.

Deep commitment and collaboration across the interdisciplinary team of rehabilitation specialists is essential to ensuring the safe discharge of our patients with an SCI.

At OhioHealth, leadership in nursing isn’t just a title, it’s a mindset. The OhioHealth Nurse Leader Development Program shapes nurses at every stage of their careers to embrace leadership, whether they are at the bedside, in administration or beyond.

Edwin Clark, MSN, RN's path to becoming a clinical nurse manager started behind a coffee counter. While working as a barista at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, he befriended orthopedic nurse practitioners, sparking his interest in nursing.

After earning his degree, Clark gained experience in stroke care, the operating room and neuro-critical care – where he discovered his passion for leadership. From there, our Nurse Leader Connect Program and education benefits helped him develop key skills to pursue his current role.

“My goal is to help be part of a team that fosters a supportive environment for associates,” Clark said. “If the associates are supported, they will feel more satisfaction with their work and they will want to continue to provide the best care that they can to our patients.”

His advice for other nurses? Communicate your goals, seek mentorship and embrace new opportunities.

“Leading at OhioHealth means that you are setting an example for others. You are working to foster the best environment for your colleagues and your patients.”

Between the flow, food and fan activities, Columbus Crew Yoga Night presented by OhioHealth was a healthy hit! 🧘

OhioHealth Yoga Instructor Monica Anderson brought the best energy to lower.com field yesterday – leading a restorative session that truly highlighted the benefits of yoga practice.

“From increased mobility, balance and strength to the meditative breath work…yoga is a great addition to anyone’s wellness journey,” said Monica.

And those health benefits extend to professional athletes too. Crew players Evan Bush and Abraham Romero joined Monica and participants on the pitch to help demonstrate the poses.

Goalkeeper Evan Bush shared he’s been practicing yoga for more than 15 years, and it has supported his longevity in the game.

“I credit a lot of my longevity and staying injury-free for most of my career to the yoga that I do. Not only is it great for the body – but it’s great for the mind. What we do can be very stressful at times, so trying to get a yoga session in the day before a game, and then at the start of every week is very important to me and sets me on the right path,” said Evan.

As the official healthcare provider of the Columbus Crew, that is music to our ears! 🤩

The OhioHealth Doctors Hospital Community Care Clinic is celebrating its one-year anniversary this summer! Since opening in July 2024, the healthcare team has treated more than 3,000 patients and made meaningful progress in serving individuals without an established doctor.

Offering walk-in services like routine primary care for adults and children, chronic disease management, vaccinations and more – the clinic aims to close care gaps in the surrounding community.

With the addition of this practice, there has been a 14% reduction in avoidable emergency department visits and 560+ patients are now seeing a dedicated primary care provider outside the clinic. ohlth.co/4mKrXdg
