A big "thank you" to the Cedar Hills Elks Lodge #2678 from the team!

The Elks generously presented Mercy Health Foundation Jefferson with a $2,000 donation which will directly support Mercy Birthplace - Jefferson by providing essential equipment, materials and supplies needed to care for infants born with drug dependencies — both during their hospital stay and as they transition home with their families.

Great work by the Elks and everyone who supported their series of community-driven events, including their annual Battle of the Bands, two bike rides, local sponsorships, T-shirt sales and other fundraising activities.

We are growing the team at 65 Prime+ by Mercy Primary Care – South City with the addition of nurse practitioner Julie Rubin. Julie joins Drs. Molly Ehlman, Carolyn Koenig and Marina Russell at this primary care clinic specially designed for Medicare beneficiaries. 65 Prime+ care includes extended visit times, more frequent visits to better address chronic conditions and doctors and advanced practice providers focused on senior care.

“I love being a primary care provider, being able to establish long-standing relationships with patients, becoming part of their team and helping them manage their health on the continuum,” Rubin said.

Rubin was born and raised in St. Louis, and she is now married and raising her two school-aged children here. She enjoys being actively involved in her kids’ school and extracurricular activities.

Before she worked in Mercy Pediatrics, Pat Ameis was known for something special — delivering more than just meals.

She brought patients handmade signs with uplifting messages, always paired with a kind word and a smile. Those small moments left a big mark. People still remember the signs they got from Pat during their hardest days.

Now, she brings that same comfort to kids and families in our pediatric unit.

When you support the Mercy Health Foundation, you're helping caregivers like Pat bring hope in ways that go far beyond medicine.

Last month, the Joplin communities' chapter of Women With a Mission gathered for its membership social, where the group also votes on the various projects and needs it will fund for the Joplin, Carthage, Columbus, Galena and now Pittsburg communities! Since this chapter's founding in 2016, it has allocated $674,000 toward critical health care needs in these communities.

This time around, a record-breaking $115,000 was allocated for a host of needs including pediatric audiometers, ultrasound and cardiopulmonary technology, a bladder scanner, a maternal fetal medicine ultrasound bed and much, much more. As if the name wasn't proof enough, it's clear these women are indeed carrying out the mission of providing the highest possible quality heath care to our community. Please join us in thanking Women With a Mission members and the Mercy Health Foundation for making these tremendous gifts possible!

Mercy joins the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a humble servant leader and courageous voice for justice, whose compassion for others knew no bounds. He reminded us that the virtue of mercy is not passive - but rather a call to action - showing up for those who are overlooked, bringing hope to those who struggle and walking alongside people who are often forgotten.

We hold Pope Francis in our prayers: Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

As Pope Francis taught us, “Let us treat others with the same passion and compassion with which we want to be treated.” May we carry forward his legacy!

Heads up! We have been made aware of fraudulent activity taking place involving an individual calling vendors and other businesses falsely claiming to be an employee of Mercy and asking them to make payments for various items. Please be aware that is not how Mercy operates and that if you receive one of these calls, it is almost certainly a scam. Stay safe and please help us spread the word!

"You better watch out, you better not cry!"

There was no pouting at this week when a very special visitor stopped by to see some of our tiniest patients! We're not sure how he had time to come and see us on top of delivering presents all over the world, but we do know some kiddos and their families are thankful he did!

From all of us to all of you, Merry Christmas.

Do you ever see one of our volunteers and wonder about their life's story? Us, too! We continue to highlight them because they matter. Dorothy Griglione grew up in Grandview, Mo., and worked in the Social Security office in downtown Kansas City after high school.

After working in that office for 37 years, Dorothy was one of only three associates who started as a clerk and moved through each department, eventually becoming a manager and retiring as a Level 13 Supervisor in the disability processing department. Dorothy joined the Mt. Carmel Auxiliary in 2015, and we're thrilled that she did!

This breast cancer awareness month, it's important to remember that, while it's rare, men can get the disease, too. Cody Brennfoerder is proof, and a great example of the best mindset a person can have after a scary diagnosis. His message? "Get yourself checked."

JOPLIN, Mo. — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While women are much more likely to get the disease than men, it can happen to them too. Usually, it’s a good thing when you defy the o…
