Celebrate Juneteenth with Columbus Speech & Hearing by giving the gift of literacy!

From June 19 through August 22, we’re collecting new books for children ages 0–6, especially those featuring characters from diverse backgrounds. These books will be donated to underserved children through our screening sites and community partners.

Drop off your new book(s) to your speech pathologist, audiologist, or at the front office when you check in for your session.

Let’s honor Juneteenth by giving every child the chance to see themselves in the stories they read!

April is Deaf History Month!

All month long, we honor the stories, culture, and contributions of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. It’s a time to listen, learn, and uplift voices that too often go unnoticed.

As we honor National Deaf History Month and celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, we are proud to recognize the work our predecessors have done and the paths they have paved. We remain mindful of the work still to be done.

We proudly join our allied partners and organizations in celebrating this important month. We will continue to advocate for the right to equitable language access and inclusion.

Why Deaf History Month Is Important:

🗣️ Advocating for the Rights of Deaf Persons

Many Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals still face stigma and barriers in our society. This month reminds us to speak up for access, inclusion, and respect.

🤟 Celebrating the Community

The Deaf community is vibrant, diverse, and resilient. Deaf History Month offers a meaningful moment to recognize their impact and contributions.

👁️‍🗨️ Creating Awareness

With awareness comes empathy, and with empathy comes change. Let’s take this time to grow in understanding and celebrate the power of language and identity.

Happy Friday! Today, Speech Director Carrie is here to teach us the American Sign Language (ASL) sign for "like," or to be fond of something. ⬇️ Comment below something you like that you plan to use this sign for!

To sign "Like" in ASL, follow these steps:

1. Place the palm of your dominant hand on your chest with your fingers extended.
2. Bring your thumb and middle finger together in a pinching motion as you move your hand slightly away from your chest.
3. Repeat.

If it helps, you can imagine that there is an invisible string you are pulling from your heart.

Learn more ASL when you take one of our Sign Language classes, including Family ASL! Register online today at ColumbusSpeech.org/ASL.

It's Neurodiversity Celebration Week! 🌈 ♾️

Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a worldwide initiative that challenges misconceptions, stereotypes, and stigma surrounding neurological differences.

According to the official NCW website, this week "aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported... [recognizing] the many skills and talents of neurodivergent individuals, while creating more inclusive and equitable cultures that celebrate differences and empower every individual."

The term “neurodivergent” is a label people may use to describe themselves when they have a condition that affects how they think, learn, process information, or engage with the world. Common conditions among those who identify as neurodivergent include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and more.

Neurodivergence itself is not a diagnosis, and not everyone with a diagnosed condition or learning disability considers themselves to be neurodivergent. Rather, it is an umbrella term that people may use to refer to the unique ways their brains work.

"Neurodiversity" is the belief that neurological differences are a strength. When we allow neurodivergent individuals to thrive in the workplace, at school, and in our community, we invite a wide variety of perspectives, ideas, strategies, and more.

Let's celebrate neurodiversity this week and every week!

🛑 You've seen a stop sign before, but what about the sign "stop?"

Learn the sign for "stop" in American Sign Language (ASL) with speech therapist Cara! Welcome back, Cara!!

Here are step-by-step instructions on how to sign the word "stop" in ASL:

1. Place your non-dominant hand out in front of you, palm facing up.
2. Hold your dominant hand higher, keeping your fingers together and your palm facing you.
3. Lower your dominant hand pinky-first until it firmly collides with your other hand's palm.
4. Repeat to emphasize the command if needed.

You can think of this sign as one hand "stopping" the other from a karate chop, or whatever works for you! This sign is very helpful for children and adults to communicate "STOP" non-verbally.

Try it at home today, and register for our full ASL courses at ColumbusSpeech.org/ASL.

Today is World Hearing Day! 🌎🦻

Every year on March 3rd, we come together to raise awareness about the importance of hearing health and the impact of hearing loss on individuals and communities. It's a day to remind ourselves of the significance of early intervention and the steps we can take to protect our hearing.

Let's encourage others to get their hearing checked regularly and adopt healthy hearing practices. Whether it's turning down the volume, wearing ear protection in noisy environments, or seeking help from an audiologist like the ones at CSH, every action counts. Don't wait to get tested - take our quick and easy hearing test at www.ColumbusSpeech.org.

Join us in spreading the word and advocating for hearing health on World Hearing Day!
