The Debra Smith Wellness Center BRINGING COLUMBUS GEORGIA'S LGBTQ COMMUNITY A BETTER & HEALTHIER WAY OF LIFE WITH COLGAY PRIDE

10/16/2024

We hope everyone can chip in just $5 to support our cause. Every little bit helps, and if you can give more, that's even better, because the future of our events and programs is at stake. Let's be real—there's nothing for LGBTQ+ folks in Columbus except what we put together: Diversity Saturdays, the upcoming Halloween Festival, the Rock the Ribbon World AIDS Day concert, support groups, free HIV testing, and education.

If you own a business and want to be a vendor, that helps us too. There are so many ways to support. Call or text us, and we'll find a solution together.

Thanks for your support.

# # We apologize for the cancellation of the March 2nd Diversity Saturdays event

Due to the current weather conditions, we regret to inform you that the Diversity Saturdays event scheduled for March 2nd has been canceled. The ground is expected to be muddy, and rain and mud are not conducive to the comfort and safety of our drag queens, who would have to get dressed and ready under a tent on muddy ground. We value their well-being and want to ensure a positive experience for everyone involved.

# # Rescheduling the vigil for Nex Benedict

The vigil for Nex Benedict will be rescheduled for next week. We will provide updates regarding the new date and location of the vigil. We appreciate your understanding and patience in this matter. We were truly excited about this event, but unfortunately, the weather conditions have made it impossible to proceed as planned. We look forward to seeing you in April for our next event.

# # Thank you for your understanding

Thank you all for your understanding and support. We apologize once again for any inconvenience caused by the cancellation. We hope you have a blessed weekend and stay safe, warm, and dry. Remember, always be true to yourself!

Reflecting on the Legacy of Past Presidents and the Impact of Leadership
It is crucial to recognize and uphold the qualities and respect that former presidents embodied before and after the tenure of Donald Trump. These leaders were once revered and esteemed globally, emblematic of America's pride as a diverse nation. However, it is evident that there has been a shift in perceptions. Some now yearn to elect candidates who may lack the ability to effectively represent themselves, prioritizing personal victories over the greater good. Unfortunately, this presidency has contributed to a surge in anti-democratic and anti-diversity sentiments, potentially leading to internal conflicts within our nation. Instead of fostering reconciliation and unity, this individual continues to drive a wedge between us. It is imperative for our citizens to comprehend the repercussions and make well-informed decisions when casting their votes. The diminishing of the qualities that were once esteemed in our leaders underscores the urgency for awakening and truly understanding the impact of the choices made for the future of our country.

# Reflecting on the AIDS 5K Journey: From Hope to Advocacy

Organizing and participating in the AIDS 5K event has been a journey filled with emotions, challenges, and triumphs. From the initial nervousness and doubts to the overwhelming support and participation, this event has evolved into a powerful platform for raising awareness and advocating for change.

# # Nervous Beginnings and Overwhelming Support

At the outset, there were understandable concerns and uncertainties about organizing an event centered around such a stigmatized and sensitive issue as AIDS. However, the unwavering support from the community and the growing number of participants each year served as a testament to the importance of spreading awareness and fighting the stigma associated with the illness.

* The initial nervousness and doubts about organizing an event centered around AIDS
* Overwhelming support and participation from the community

# # Growth and Transition to LGBT Advocacy

As the AIDS 5K event grew over the years, it became apparent that the impact of HIV/AIDS extended beyond the illness itself. The 10th Annual 5K marked a significant turning point as the decision was made to transition to LGBT advocacy. This transition was a natural progression, acknowledging the interconnectedness of HIV/AIDS and the LGBTQ+ community.

* Acknowledging the interconnectedness of HIV/AIDS and the LGBTQ+ community

# # Changing Perceptions and Ongoing Stigma

Over the years, the perception of AIDS has shifted from being a death sentence to a manageable condition, thanks to advances in medical treatment. However, the ongoing stigma associated with the illness continues to pose significant challenges. This stigma not only affects those living with HIV/AIDS but also hinders efforts to educate and advocate for acceptance.

* Changing perception of AIDS from a death sentence to a manageable condition
* Ongoing stigma associated with the illness and its impact on advocacy efforts

# # Challenges in the South and the Importance of Education

In the South, particularly in relation to transgender rights and gender-affirming care, challenges regarding education and acceptance persist. Ignorance and hate continue to impede progress, resulting in a negative impact on individuals' lives and mental well-being. It is crucial to address these challenges and work towards fostering a more inclusive and accepting environment.

* Challenges in the South regarding education and acceptance, particularly in relation to transgender rights and gender-affirming care
* Negative impact of ignorance and hate on individuals' lives and mental well-being

As we reflect on the journey of organizing and participating in the AIDS 5K event, it is clear that while progress has been made, there is still much work to be done. The transition to LGBT advocacy signifies a commitment to addressing the broader issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, and it is through continued education, advocacy, and community support that we can strive for a more inclusive and accepting society.

It's amazing what the new AI software can do. I was pouting last night to a friend about a recent confrontation with someone within the community who had said a lot of nasty things about me and he showed me this, pulling up everything about my work by simply asking his AI what has jeremy hobbs done in Columbus Georgia. He then went on to say No One works as hard as you do for Columbus Georgia and the LGBTQ Community. And you know what this was very impressive, not bragging of course, but I didn't know I had done so much for our city.
