If you’d told 18-year-old Shane McDougall that one day he’d be back in his hometown of Columbus running a senior living facility, he might have been less than thrilled. But the path he’s taken since then has taught him that the best opportunities are often the ones you least expect.

“There have been so many people who saw things in me that I didn’t see yet,” says McDougall, who since 2021 has been the executive director of Spring Harbor at Green Island, a senior facility in the Piedmont Healthcare network. “I never thought in a million years I’d be sitting where I’m sitting, and I’m beyond thankful to those mentors who took the time to say, ‘Hey, I think you should be involved in this’ or ‘I think we can build off this.’ They would open up doors for me that I probably would not have walked into for a very long time.”

Our residents loved their visit from Angie and her certified pet therapy dog, Bailey. Bailey brought smiles, cuddles, and even considered jumping in for a round of chair volleyball.

Therapy visits like these fill our community with laughter, connection, and pure happiness.

Today, Paul Hostetter, Ethel Foley Distinguished Chair in Orchestral Activities, shared about the Healing Notes program—sponsored by the Spring Harbor Foundation—to bring the power of music therapy to our Health Center residents.

Our Memory Care residents were delighted by a special performance from two talented Schwob students. These students receive intensive training in therapeutic music, bringing comfort, joy, and connection through every note.

The Spring Harbor leadership team had the privilege of volunteering with Feeding the Valley Food Bank this week!

Together, we packed 333 Mobile Pantry boxes—an effort that supports families across 18 counties in Georgia. Through this program, more than 12,000 families each month in rural areas gain access to nutritious groceries, including canned goods, fresh produce, frozen meats, dairy, and bakery items.

It was a meaningful day of teamwork and giving back, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside Feeding the Valley Food Bank and United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley
