The McCluskey family has been a part of the greater Columbus medical community for generations. As we celebrate our 75th Anniversary as a hospital this year, St. Francis Orthopaedic Institute surgeon Leland McCluskey, M.D., a lifelong Columbus resident, took time to share some of his favorite memories of a medical career caring for and treating our community.

He fondly remembers the many clinicians he has worked with over the years, always providing a guiding hand and enjoying watching them grow personally and professionally.

Thank you Dr. McCluskey for the many lives you have touched and healed over the years. Inspired by Purpose, We are Shaping the Heart of Healthcare together.

The relationship between patient and physician can be so rewarding when everything aligns perfectly. In the case of new mom Nicole Blakemore, the bonds fostered with St. Francis OBGYN’s Kirby Chisholm, M.D., made her birth experience one to cherish.

While everything didn’t go exactly to the birth plan for the Blakemore family, having a trusted physician in her corner, supported by a team of dedicated clinicians and educators, made the difference for Nicole and her beautiful baby.

The DAISY Award recognizes the extraordinary compassion and care nurses provide every day. Congrats to our latest DAISY Award winner Chareka Herbert, RN, a nurse that proudly cares for patients in our Post-Anesthesia Care Unit or PACU. A colleague recognized Chareka for seamlessly stepping into another role to assist in our Operating Room, drawing on her previous experience as a Surgical Tech, to make sure the procedure stayed on schedule.

Here is a small excerpt from her nomination:

“Chareka showed extraordinary care, adaptability, and dedication during a recent emergent procedure in the middle of the night. Upon arriving for her PACU role, Chareka quickly recognized that a surgical tech needed for the case was not present. Without hesitation, she stepped in to assist in her former role as a Surgical Tech, seamlessly filling that position so the procedure could begin without delay. Her quick action ensured that the patient received timely and safe care during a critical situation.

“What makes Chareka's actions even more remarkable is that after assisting in the OR, she transitioned right back into her PACU responsibilities and care for the same patient through recovery. From the start of the case through post anesthesia recovery, she remained a constant, reassuring presence – demonstrating clinic excellence, adaptability, and a deep sense of responsibility to her patient. She exemplifies teamwork, compassion, and patient centered care.”

St. Francis-Emory Healthcare kicked off its 75th Birthday weekend celebration today with a special event for our amazing employees, the ones that make our organization the best place to work and care for the communities we hold dear to our hearts.

We had snacks with commemorative T-shirts, cupcakes and a photo booth to capture the occasion. A very special thanks to the children at Blanchard, Rigdon Road, Georgetown, Allen and River Road Elementaries who blessed us with some amazing happy birthday cards to mark the importance of our 75th year. Our team was absolutely blown away by your creativity and kindness, sharing so many special pictures and words with us.

The best part is our celebration is just starting. Mark your calendars and join us from 1-4 p.m. this Sunday afternoon on the Butler Pavilion side of the hospital as we celebrate with you.
