Senator Adam Schiff Visits Glenn Medical Center to Discuss Path Forward for Rural Healthcare in Glenn County
Willows, CA — Today, Glenn Medical Center was honored to host Senator Adam Schiff and members of his staff for a visit and working discussion focused on the future of healthcare access in Glenn County. Following a tour of the hospital campus, Senator Schiff convened a roundtable with hospital leadership, city and county representatives, members of the medical community, local farmers, first responders, patients, and former employees to discuss the wide-ranging impacts the hospital’s closure has had on the region.
The discussion included Senator Schiff’s bipartisan legislative efforts aimed at protecting the Critical Access Hospital designation for Willows, building on earlier work led by Doug LaMalfa. The legislation is expected to advance to a vote in the coming weeks and represents an important step toward preserving eligibility for rural healthcare services in the community.
Hospital leadership emphasized that while legislative action is critical, it is only one component of a much broader and more complex pathway to restoring services. Significant financial and regulatory challenges remain, including the high cost of bringing the existing facility back into compliance with current codes. Leaders outlined the difficult but necessary evaluation underway comparing the feasibility of remodeling the current structure versus pursuing new construction to meet modern healthcare standards.
“We appreciate Senator Schiff taking the time to hear directly from our community and to understand the realities rural Californians face when access to local healthcare is lost,” said hospital administrator Lauren Still. “We look forward to continuing this work, strengthening our coalition, and exploring sustainable solutions that can ultimately bring healthcare services and jobs back to Glenn County.”
