For women at average risk, it's recommended to start mammograms at age 40.

For Erica, annual mammograms were always part of her routine. But just after her 46th birthday, one appointment brought unexpected news. What started as a simple screening turned into a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma, a form of breast cancer that is often difficult to detect.

A friend recommended that she go to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). Erica chose to receive her care at MSK Basking Ridge, which is close to her hometown in New Jersey. Her care team included breast medical oncologist Dr. Mila Gorsky and breast surgeon Dr. Deborah Capko. Together, they put a treatment plan in place for Erica that included a double mastectomy, 16 rounds of chemotherapy, and 25 rounds of radiation.

“It was shocking. I felt like I had done everything right,” Erica recalls. “But from the moment I came to MSK, I felt cared for. Every person I met, from the doctors and nurses to the front desk staff and valet, made me feel seen and supported.”

Through it all, Erica leaned on her husband, their four children, and their two international students her family had welcomed into their home. “Having the kids depend on me gave me strength,” she says. “There are hard days and there are better days, but having a positive attitude and the amazing team at MSK really does help.”

Today, Erica is back at work and is feeling great. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, pursuing her love of fashion, sharing her story online, and supporting others who are newly diagnosed. When reflecting on her experience: “Stay positive and go to MSK,” Erica says. “They have the best technology and the most compassionate team. They really care about you as a person.”

Head to our Reel from earlier today to see Erica ringing the end-of-treatment bell after her 25 rounds of radiation! đź””

Sabine, 43, defied the odds that were given to her when she was first diagnosed with brain cancer and recently celebrated her 11-year cancer anniversary. 👏

Sabine was diagnosed in May 2014 and has built strong relationships throughout the years with her MSK care team, including neuro-oncologist Dr. Ingo Mellinghoff. Throughout her treatment at MSK, she received the standard of care therapy for her type of tumor, including six weeks of daily radiation treatment, administered at MSK Basking Ridge for proximity to her home. Her treatment also included a year of oral chemotherapy. Today, Sabine’s scans have been stable, and despite lingering cognitive impairments, she’s doing very well.

“I know that I am on the far-right end of the bell curve and one of the lucky ones. I therefore do my best to give back to the brain tumor community whenever possible,” says Sabine, who is an advocate for cancer research funding.

Dr. Mellinghoff suggested that she sign up for MSK’s Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality (PFACQ), where she’s able to have a seat at the table and represent the patient voice on several hospital-wide committees. “We have something no one else can add: Our experience is our expertise!”

Sabine keeps busy in multiple other ways as well: she provides 1:1 mentoring to the newly diagnosed and their families and attends national conferences to keep up-to-date with the cancer research landscape. “I often serve as patient advisor to the research community and aspire to break down barriers through knowledge dissemination and education.”

As a PFACQ member, Sabine received a patient-centered grant by the Society of MSK, titled “Virtual Reality Intervention in Oncology”. This grant allowed Sabine to implement virtual reality headsets that serve as a form of distraction therapy through a variety of outdoor adventure videos specifically created for the cancer community.

Employee Spotlight: Earlier this year, Julie Garcia, Associate Director of Software Engineering at MSK, completed the famed Iditarod trail on her fat bike — an off-road bicycle with extra wide tires — coming in first place among female bikers in the 2025 Iditarod Trail Invitational (ITI) in Alaska.

Julie conquered the elements and competed across 1,000 miles, taking her from Anchorage to Nome.

She shares her advice for those seeking strategies for success for all challenges in life and work: “It sounds a little cheesy, but one thing I’ve learned from doing this is that we’re all capable of more than we think,” she says. “Just take things one day at a time and enjoy where you are in the moment. If you just keep going, you’ll get where you want to be eventually.”

When James, a world-class rowing coach from Ireland, was diagnosed with head and neck cancer that had spread to his salivary gland, his doctors in Ireland recommended a very extensive surgery that would have permanently damaged his facial nerve and drastically altered his life.

Hoping for a different path, James traveled to MSK for a second opinion where he met with MSK head and neck surgeon Dr. Richard Wong. Instead of surgery, he thought James was a good candidate to try immunotherapy.

Dr. Wong connected James with MSK head and neck medical oncologist Dr. Lara Dunn, who James says he found a kindred spirit in: “As a coach, you have to be very honest with athletes but also empathize with them,” he says. “With Dr. Dunn, it was like I was with a good coach. She’s one of the most amazing people you can meet.”

James began immunotherapy and in a matter of months, the cancer shrank significantly. James then underwent a much smaller operation to remove a small amount of residual cancer. This approach not only spared his facial nerve but also preserved his ability to continue the work he loves.

Today, James is cancer free and back on the water, coaching elite rowing squads in Ireland and the U.S., and guiding athletes all the way to the Olympics.

When Rose was diagnosed with breast cancer at 33, her first thoughts were not only about treatment but also about her dream of becoming a mom.

In November 2020, she felt a lump in her breast and trusted her instincts to find answers. After a biopsy at her local hospital confirmed breast cancer, she and her husband came to MSK where she met with MSK breast surgeon Dr. George Plitas. “From the start, he was kind and compassionate,” she says. Just before the new year, Dr. Plitas called Rose and confirmed her cancer was stage 2 triple-positive breast cancer.

With the guidance of Dr. Plitas and MSK breast medical oncologist Dr. Jacqueline Bromberg, Rose began discussions about treatment while also pursuing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to preserve her fertility. In January 2021, she was able to complete egg retrieval just before starting chemotherapy.

Her treatment included a few months of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, and a mastectomy in June 2021. On August 20, 2021, she finished radiation, a date she celebrates as her “cancer-free anniversary.”

In early 2024, Rose returned to her fertility journey. After one setback, her second embryo transfer was successful. That November, she and her husband welcomed their daughter, Chloe, into the world.

“When I was diagnosed and my world felt like it was falling apart, Dr. Plitas and Dr. Bromberg carried me through my most vulnerable moments and guided me toward fertility preservation, which I hadn’t even had the time or headspace to consider,” Rose shares. “Because of their extraordinary care, I was able to come out on the other side of a difficult journey with the greatest gift of all—motherhood—and the joy of my life, my Chloe.”

Today, Rose is thriving as both a survivor and a mom. In her free time, she enjoys trying new restaurants, caring for her growing collection of house plants, and above all, she loves savoring every moment with her daughter, Chloe.
