JENNIFER DOUGHERTY, LMSW
LICENSED MASTER SOCIAL WORKER
Jennifer is a Licensed Master Social Worker in both New York and North Carolina. She earned her Master of Social Work degree from Fordham University in New York City. Jennifer has worked with diverse populations in inpatient psychiatric hospitals, long-term residential psychiatric facilities, and outpatient clinical settings. She is skilled at conducting biopsychosocial assessments, case management, working on interdisciplinary care teams, formulating collaborative treatment plans, referring to community services, maintaining continuity of care, and providing culturally competent psychotherapy and crisis intervention. Jennifer is also a licensed attorney in the state of New York. Her legal background helped inspire a passion for mental health and wellness. She was drawn to the unique person-in-environment roots of the social work profession and believes that the holistic incorporation of all elements of a person's experience is essential to creating more fulfilling, balanced, joy-filled lives.
For Jennifer, the therapeutic relationship is the most critical element of treatment. Trust, caring, respect, acceptance, and mutual collaboration form the foundation for creating sustained, meaningful change. She genuinely cares for her clients and believes that all individuals possess the power to heal within themselves. In session, she is calm, centered, and always listening from a place of nonjudgment and empathic curiosity.
With a genuine passion for her work, Jennifer collaborates with clients to create individualized, person-centered therapeutic experiences tailored to each client's unique needs and desires. She utilizes an integrative, trauma-informed approach, incorporating elements from various evidence-based interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy, Gottman Couples Therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), and some somatic interventions.
Jennifer’s specialties include working with adults (18+) experiencing the symptoms of anxiety and depression, which often occur together and can arise from many situations such as life transitions, suppressed trauma, chronic medical illness, terminal medical diagnoses, grief, and loss. Jennifer also works with couples experiencing relationship challenges, helping them navigate toward improved communication and deeper connection. She creates a safe and supportive environment where the dynamics of a couple’s relationship can be explored to help resolve conflicts, gain insight, improve intimacy, and build more resilient and fulfilling partnerships.
When not working, Jennifer enjoys spending time in nature. She loves good books, healthy organic food, music, movies, dark chocolate, travel, and spending time with family and friends.
