Cleansing and detoxing my body is a huge part of maintaining my med-free mental health regiment.
I took pharmaceuticals for anxiety and depression for 20 years (!!) and these types of drugs (Selective Serontin Re-Uptake Inhibitors, SSRIs) wreak havoc on the body, especially the liver (which is our body’s filter) and drastically alter the gut terrain, which is where over 95% of Serontonin is produced ! (Korn, 2014)
This is why so many people who begin taking SSRIs for depression and anxiety (Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, to name a few) end up experiencing digestive issues as side effects, losing or gaining weight, stomach upset, loss of appetite, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
These medications can also lead to gut permeability , aka, “leaky gut” leading to not only inflammation and food intolerances, but creating nutritional deficits that compromise the body’s ability to produce Serotonin, the exact neurotransmitter that the pharmaceuticals are targeting to increase..
How ironic! ✨
The solution is often health care providers prescribing MORE pharmaceuticals (!) and the cycles goes on and on…
