🤨How can I encourage my kid to talk more after school?

Parents often ask me this. As a mom, I completely understand! I want all the details too! I’ve learned so much about the connection of communication and dysregulation after a few years with my own son along with working with both neurodiverse and neurotypical clients. If the mind and body are not regulated, communication isn’t happening.

I listened to .ebert.seminars podcast this past week about back-to-school stress and found her tips so helpful.. so much so that I wanted to get the information out for parents who aren’t frequent listeners!

I used a few of these strategies with my son when he started kindergarten, and it made a difference in his anxiety and regulation. In addition the “priming strategies” as I like to call them, I also found that waiting to talk about school later in the night with less questions and more “I wonder…” statements made a big impact. Save this post and consider trying them with your child heading back to school!

Imitation is crucial for speech and language development! 🧠💬

Before children say their first words, they’re watching, copying, and learning. From gestures to sounds to words, imitation is how toddlers begin to connect and interact. 👧🏻👦🏽

Mirror neurons are messengers in our brain that fire when a toddler does something and when they observe someone else doing it. This auditory motor integration allows our toddlers little brains to process and match the action. Before those little brains can imitate words, they need to imitate actions, gestures, and vocalizations. 🪞👂🏼

If your toddler is not imitating words, we find which stage of imitation they are at and work from there. Thank you to Laura Mize for organizing these hierarchies. All brains work differently, and it’s important to note that our neurodivergent toddlers may learn differently and require a different approach! ♾️🫶🏼

🧠Neuroplasticity plays a crucial role in recovering from a brain injury by allowing the brain to reorganize and form new connections in response to injury. When a stroke occurs, certain areas of the brain are damaged, often impairing functions like movement, speech, language, or memory. However, the brain has the remarkable ability to “rewire” itself, which means other parts of the brain can take over the functions previously handled by the damaged area!

🧠The key to maximizing neuroplasticity during recovery involves setting meaningful, personal goals, combined with consistent, specific rehabilitation that focuses on high intensity, repetition, and frequency. We will individually tailor your therapy to you and your brain!
