We loved sharing the wonder of what lives inside of burdock seed pods with our second grade friends today! Larvae of the Burdock Seedhead Moth (Metzneria lappella) spend the winter eating the seeds and preparing to emerge as moths in the spring!

Birding is a wonderful way to connect with our natural resources. Come and learn all about it on Sunday, February 15 from 12-3:30 p.m.! Exhibitors from various local organizations will be ready to help you get started with a healthy, fun hobby for the new year with information about:

Bird identification and behavior.
Local birding field trip opportunities.
Feeding birds in your yard.
Using binoculars.
Parks and natural areas to visit.
And much more!

Those age 55 or older can register for the Early Bird Hour, 10:30 a.m.– noon, for a jumpstart to the event!

1-2 p.m. Friends of Whitefish Point: Owls of Whitefish Point
Chris Neri and Nova Mackently have been banding migrating owls in the eastern UP for over 25 years! Come hear their stories and insights into the trends of these nocturnal raptors.

2:30-3:30 p.m. Michigan Avian Experience: Michigan Birds of Prey
Join Michigan Avian Experience to meet three live birds of prey during an engaging and informational presentation highlighting their adaptations and behaviors.

All events included with the price of admission. Preregistration is required for the Senior Early Bird Hours.

Vernal pool season is fast approaching! This February, register for the Vernal Pool Patrol free virtual training series, where you'll learn how to monitor and protect vernal pools -- the first session begins tomorrow!

There are three training sessions this month, each covering a different aspect of vernal pool ecology and monitoring. Training sessions will be held Tuesday evenings from 6-8pm EST, beginning February 10th. For more information, or to register for the training series, visit the Michigan Vernal Pool Patrol website at the link below!

Some days we watch birds outside, and some days we watch them inside!
I heard this male Downy Woodpecker hit the window and watched him fall. I was fairly sure his neck was broken, but wasn’t willing to give up on him. I placed him in a small box in my office ~ warm, quiet, and dark. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and he immediately flew out! The students were thrilled to see him up close, and we all celebrated as he flew away into the winter sun.
