Myth or Fact? Let’s Talk About AAC Devices.

AAC is not only for nonverbal children and it does not prevent speech development. Research shows AAC often supports and enhances verbal language. These tools can benefit individuals of all ages, including those who can speak but find communication challenging in certain situations.

Learning to use AAC takes time, patience, and practice—just like learning to speak. Also, using an AAC device doesn’t mean someone will need it forever. Communication supports can evolve as skills grow, based on individual needs and family input.

Understanding AAC helps us build more inclusive, supportive communication environments for everyone.

We’re excited to share an important Medicare policy change that will improve access to knee braces for Medicare beneficiaries living with osteoarthritis (OA)!

Starting January 25, 2026, Medicare will expand coverage of knee orthoses (braces) used to treat medial or lateral tibiofemoral osteoarthritis — even when objective joint instability is not documented.

We’re excited to welcome Taylor as our new Director of Lymphedema!

Taylor will oversee the day-to-day operations of our lymphedema program, bringing both leadership and hands-on clinical expertise to our patients and team.

Taylor is an Occupational and Lymphedema Therapist with a graduate degree in Occupational Therapy and Klose’s Lymphedema Therapy certification. Her clinical background spans long-term acute care, outpatient, and home health settings, with specialized experience in lymphedema management, breast cancer rehabilitation, orthopedics, and home safety.

Taylor’s dedication to patient-centered care and her diverse clinical experience make her a valuable addition to the Befitting You team. We’re thrilled to have her leading our lymphedema services and supporting our patients every step of the way. 💜

Mattel recently introduced its newest Barbie: Autistic Barbie Fashionista 💜
While some may say this doll doesn’t “look autistic,” autism doesn’t have a specific look. This Barbie represents inclusion by highlighting everyday tools and experiences that many individuals with autism use and rely on—including assistive communication.

Autistic Barbie carries a tablet, commonly known as an AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) speech-generating device. For many individuals, AAC isn’t just a support—it’s their voice.

At Befitting You, we see firsthand how vital communication access is. In 2025, we proudly served over 500 children and adults with speech-generating devices, including individuals with significant speech impairments, communication delays, and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

When toys, media, and everyday conversations normalize AAC and assistive technology:
• Children feel seen and validated
• Peers develop understanding instead of assumptions
• Families feel less alone
• Communication differences are treated as differences—not deficits

Life doesn’t always throw us the easiest of challenges. Otis, one of Befitting You’s longest patients, has overcome a variety of obstacles, including those related to the loss of his leg 15 years ago. With the help of a great care team and his faith, Otis has an amazing outlook on life and is doing wonderful! One of Befitting You’s prosthetists, Paul, checks in with Otis often to make sure he is doing well and if there is anything Befititng You can assist him with.
