A student shared something meaningful with me today.
She told me that although she’s been exposed to yoga for years, one major difference she’s experiencing in our studio is the absence of competition. For the first time, she feels comfortable in her own skin.
In the past, she would wonder if she belonged in a class, or if not being able to do a movement the same way someone else could somehow made her less than or inadequate. Now, that comparison has softened — and in its place is a growing sense of ease, presence, and trust in herself.
And this is freedom: becoming comfortable in the present moment.
The mind no longer has to measure, perform, or prove.
It can simply be.

This is the quiet power of a safe, non-competitive practice space — where nervous systems settle, self-judgment loosens, and people begin to feel at home in themselves again.

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” — MLK

In yoga, we practice showing up without needing the full picture — feeling our way forward through breath, sensation, repetition, and attention.
Over time, something subtle starts to happen: we begin to recognize what clarity feels like in the body. Not certainty. Not control. Just a quiet sense of “yes,” a steadiness that invites movement.

Maybe the mat is a place where we learn how to trust that inner signal — and carry it into conversations, choices, boundaries, creativity, healing, and change.
Where might a small, honest first step be asking for your attention right now?

The last three days I was privileged to attend the second annual IIYT Symposium on Clinical Advancements in Yoga Therapy. I imagine most conferences for one’s career path don’t go down like this one. Yoga Therapy is special. People hug, they share openly from their hearts and discuss how they can serve the hearts of people they don’t know yet, how they can reach communities that currently don’t have access, once in a while there are tears and it’s ok. This base of support and safety creates a foundation where bright and motivated minds come together to share research, ideas and stories. With of course a few breaks for breath, movement, and mindfulness.

We learned from a wide range of speakers. Doctors from disciplines like palliative care, obstetrics, anesthesiology, oncology, pain, physical rehab.

Other professions as well: physical therapists, nurses, social workers, public health experts, body experts, and of course Yoga Therapists as well as IAYT representatives.

I feel like I heard from almost every person who attended and all were valuable to the whole. The most gratitude and thanks for the woman who brings us all together, Veronica Zador, President of IIYT, and who is a great example of someone living what she teaches.

I left inspired and motivated with plans to pass it forward.

Understanding around pain is shifting. More to come at In Vitality Yoga.

Research suggests chronic back pain is often rooted in the brain, not physical causes. A study found 66% of participants became pain-free or nearly so after pain reprocessing therapy, emphasizing the need to rethink chronic pain origins and treatment.

I took this picture of our Yin class Deep Release this week because everyone in the room had a personal way of supporting themselves in Dragonfly. We had a bolster tucked under the armpits, a bolster under the forehead, a bolster and meditation cushion under the the arms, two blocks under the forehead, a bolster under elbows and forehead, and a bolster under the forearms.

Yoga is a personal practice. It’s like a conversation, sometimes a dance, between your body, mind, and spirit. If u allow it to be. If u allow the hard outer layers to peel away and expose the tenderness underneath. The energy comes into balance so it is noticeable and free to move about and heal.

Last week I had two comments from students that touched my heart. One person told me after doing yoga for the first time, that it was so special that they felt it in their heart. This was wonderful to hear from a cardiac rehab patient. We didn’t discuss the heart during our practice that day in class but that is where she felt the energy balance for her.

Another student told me that her hips are frequently in pain and often feel like there is almost a ball inside the hip when she leans on it. But during a prone twist in Deep Release, that tension subsided. That may seem small but it is significant. The body is designed to heal but not in isolation. The mind and spirit must be in sync.
