Your Unique Breathing Patterns May Reveal Your Identity and Mental Health

Researchers have discovered that nasal breathing patterns are as unique as fingerprints and can identify individuals with nearly 97% accuracy.

Using a 24-hour wearable device, the team captured detailed nasal airflow data as participants went about their daily lives.

These “respiratory fingerprints” remained consistent across multiple sessions over two years.

Beyond identity, breathing patterns were linked to sleep cycles, BMI, anxiety, and emotional states.

For example, anxious individuals had shorter inhalations and more variability during sleep.

This suggests that breath monitoring could become a powerful diagnostic and therapeutic tool in both physical and mental health.

As you age or after injury, you might find that you have become tight, sore, even weak. This may advance to a stage where it feels uncomfortable or impossible to get up and down off the floor.

Chair yoga is proven to be a great way to gain or maintain strength, flexibility, help with sleep, reduce anxiety and depression, reduce pain, increase circulation, and improve minor cognitive impairments.

There is no reason to expect that just because we age or have had physical setbacks, we will have to be in pain, weak or inflexible. Chair yoga can be adapted for those with nearly any body type or ability.

And there is nothing about yoga reserved for only active bodies or only women. I have men and women tell me daily how they were skeptical about yoga and were surprised how much of a benefit it was after giving it a shot.

Announcing a NEW class at In Vitality. Yoga Therapy for Back Pain. Beginning May 7 at 10:30am, this small group class is designed for anyone experiencing back discomfort - from tension to chronic conditions like sciatica, disc issues, stenosis, arthritis, or scoliosis.

Each session combines therapeutic movement with breathwork, nervous system regulation, and mindful practices to support healing. We’ll work to decompress the spine, build up hip and core strength, improve posture and alignment, release piriformis, hamstrings, and hips - all while creating a space for deep inner connection.

You’ll also be guided through gentle, personalized practices drawn from a full scope of yoga therapy - including breath-led movement, meditation, intention setting, and mindfulness rooted in yoga’s holistic framework.

This was the last day of our 4 part series focusing on sciatica and low back pain. This was a fun class to teach. We slowed everything down and got technical. Our bodies are really just one system. And the parts within don’t work alone. They all support one another. We can’t work on one part without understand the whole. This includes the mind, and the spirit, not just the physical.

Grateful to have met so many new students this week, all experiencing their practice differently. The yoga sutra teaches us that right effort is required to achieve freedom and clarity. Wednesday alone, students learned more technically in our yoga for sciatica class, a student came in for a private session, other students joined for chair yoga, and in the evening students surrendered for Deep Release. We are deeply spiritual beings on the inside……digging in, peeling away, to find that soft center. It is an individual experience. I am honored to be a witness.

This means others support me. Thankful for my husband taking care of so much and my Luke for cooking dinner for the family last night when both his parents were gone.
