Last week we had the privilege of teaching CPR, AED use, and choking first aid to the upper school at American Martyrs. We are so thankful for all of the volunteer first responders, nurses, and doctors who help with this program every year with special shout out to school nurse, Liz Allyn. We are honored to also have Jim Lowrey as our guest speaker. Jim, a former AMS dad, suffered a cardiac arrest in his home 4 years ago and because of the courageous intervention and initiation of CPR by his two sons, he is alive today. Since starting this CPR program at AMS, we have had one other student who has used the skills he learned during the course on a family member who suffered an in-home cardiac arrest. Some important stats from the American Heart Association to keep in mind:
❤️nearly 1,000 people suffer from an out of hospital cardiac arrest EACH DAY in the US
❤️bystander CPR can double or triple their rates of survival
❤️only about 18% of US citizens report being current on CPR training

Please DM or text us at 310-300-2804 to find out how you or your child can get trained in CPR.

☀️ Heat & Dehydration Essentials
Electrolyte packets (Liquid IV / LMNT)
Refillable water bottle or hydration pack
Cooling towel or neck wrap
Small misting spray
Sunscreen (SPF 30+ minimum, ideally mineral for reapplication)
Lip balm with SPF
👉 Most common issue you’ll see: early heat exhaustion that people ignore until they crash.

💊 Basic Medications
Ibuprofen or naproxen (muscle aches, headaches)
Acetaminophen (backup pain/fever option)
Antihistamines (like cetirizine or diphenhydramine)
Antacids (festival food = reflux city)
Anti-diarrheal (loperamide)
Oral rehydration salts (more effective than water)

🩹 First Aid Basics
Bandaids (variety sizes)
Blister pads (critical—people walk miles)
Alcohol wipes
Antibiotic ointment
Gauze + small wrap
Tweezers (splinters, glass, cactus…)

👂 Festival-Specific Musts
Earplugs (prevent temporary hearing loss)
Saline nasal spray (dust at Coachella is real)
Eye drops (irritation from sun + dust)
Hand sanitizer + wipes (porta-potty survival)
Toilet paper packets or tissues

🧠 “Smart Add-Ons” Most People Forget
Portable phone charger (emergencies = dead phones)
Emergency contact card (in case phone dies)
Small flashlight
Snacks with salt + protein (not just sugar)
Extra socks (blister prevention is huge)

What is the most common cause of ear pain if it is not an acute infection? The condition is called serous otitis and it is a buildup of fluid in the inner ear.

Watch this video to see what the symptoms are and how to best treat it.

I didn’t even know it was Doctors Day today but walked into this loving surprise❤️ I’m very thankful for all of the wonderful doctors who have been teachers, mentors, friends, and colleagues along the way. So many of them have helped to shape the type of physician that I am today and I hope to repay them by taking good care of patients and being someone who can be counted on.❤️👩‍⚕️🩺
