Can you sit down on the floor and stand back up without using your hands? Turns out this test is predictive of how long you'll live...or, to be more accurate, of how long you won't.

This activity seems so simple but it requires flexibility, balance, motor coordination, and, most importantly, ample muscle power relative to body weight. If you can't do it, your health and longevity may be at risk.

Give it a try:

Sit on the floor from a standing position without using your hands, arms, or knees to slow your descent. Then stand back up—without using your hands, arms, or knees to help boost you back up, if possible.

If you can bravo! If you can't, here are some exercises you can do to build strength and boost your flexibility, muscle strength, and coordination:

1. Squat - aim for 3 sets of 10-15 reps, 3x a week
2. Glute Activation Lunge - step forward across your body to the 3 o'clock position as you lunge and as you lunge rotate your arms and torso in the opposite direction. Aim for 3 sets of 10-15 reps, 3x a week
3. Push-ups - work up to 3 sets of 10-15 reps, 3x a week
4. Swimmers - lie on the floor face down with your arms over your head. Raise your arms and legs off the floor and engage your abs. Begin to mimic swimming by moving the opposite arm and leg up and then switch. One rep = both limbs. Aim for 3 sets of 10-15 reps, 3x a week.

Do you feel like the Energizer Bunny most days, just going and going and going? When you're overscheduled you're adding too much external stress to your body which causes you to be in a constant state of "fight or flight".

Our bodies aren't adapted to the burden of chronic stress we place on them with today's all to common over busy lifestyles. When you experience constant stress your body will begin stealing energy from other systems such as your immune and digestive systems, and it will have a negative impact on your ability to obtain optimal sleep for rest and recovery.

If this sounds like you it can be helpful to add some support for immune health, stress and sleep to your wellness arsenal to help improve energy and prevent adrenal burnout. Check out my suggestions here:

Some wellness words of wisdom from

TLDR: Just eat whole foods

We are addicted to ultra-processed foods. They're cheap, convenient and engineered to make us want to eat more. We know they're making us sick and overweight but we just keep eating them. Why? Because with every bite our brain releases pleasure chemicals like dopamine which makes us crave more junk food to get more of that good feeling.

Food is not the enemy - but toxic, ultra-processed food and drink products are not your friend. They're like a wolf in sheep's clothing ➡️ they look nice and make you feel good in the moment but really they're just killing you slowly.

It's a cycle you can break but it takes effort.

#1 Focus on whole foods and think about where your food comes from. As in, a steak comes from a cow and apples grow on trees. If you have trouble figuring out where a food originated because it's been so highly manipulated, consider if it nourishes your body at all. It probably doesn’t.

#2 Remember that some processing is ok. Frozen fruits & veggies, dried beans, canned tuna etc. are all examples of processed foods. These foods have been altered, but not in a way that’s detrimental to health. They're convenient and help you build nutritious meals.

#3 Reduce or eliminate ultra-processed foods. These foods go through multiple processes (extrusion, molding, milling, etc.), contain many added ingredients and are highly manipulated. Examples are soda, chips, candy, ice-cream, sweetened breakfast cereals, toaster pastries, packaged baked goods, canned soups, chicken nuggets, hotdogs, fries, frozen meals, and so many more.

#4 Read labels. If it has more than 5 ingredients it's probably better left on the shelf.

Sometimes we feel so overwhelmed by the thought of starting something new, that we don't even know where to start. The problem is, we think we need to tackle the whole mountain at once, when really we just need to take one step. And then everyday just keep adding one more step. Eventually the top of the mountain is in sight!

If you are paralyzed by "the mountain," try seeing it from the 30,000 foot view instead. The path that will get you to your goal might be winding and full of ups and downs, just keep moving forward little by little.

For example, if you want to lose xx pounds and start a regular exercise program, don't try to do everything at once. Pick one thing to change until it becomes a habit, such as getting up 30 min early to walk, do yoga, ride your Peloton etc.,3-4 days a week. Once that feels "easy" add in a healthy breakfast and so on. After a few months you'll have some new habits and you'll be well on your way.

When we're talking about self-care, sleep should be at the top of your list. Why?

Sleep is a huge priority for your body to achieve optimal health, yet according to the American Sleep Association, nearly 70 million Americans struggle with a sleep disorder. Lack of sleep leaves you exhausted, unfocused and moody. It also reduces your immune function, makes you more susceptible to cravings and reduces your motivation and ability to exercise.

A full 8 hours of sleep (ideally between 10pm -6am) has many important benefits including:

😴 enhances memory, clarity and boosts mood
😴 increases your ability to handle stress
😴 improves energy and digestive health
😴 improves muscle recovery and athletic
performance
😴 improves and maintains immune function

So put down your phone, turn off the Netflix and go to bed by 10 pm... your body will thank you!

Want ti improve your push-up? Here are some modifications you can use to scale your push-up to build strength:

➡️ wall push-ups
➡️ use a bench to create an incline
➡️ use a band to assist
➡️ bring the floor to you

*You can also shorten the lever by doing push-ups on your knees, but be sure to maintain the same form and strong, level core as in the plank (aka...your butt shouldn't be up in the air)

Remember, start where you are and progressively make your push-up harder as you get stronger 💪

Want to level up your coffee? Try bulletproof coffee ☕

Bulletproof coffee is a healthy, filling alternative to your plain old morning coffee routine. It's made by blending hot brewed coffee with grass-fed butter (or ghee if you're a non-dairy person) and MCT oil and then whipping in a blender until frothy. The fats in the butter and MCT oil help fill you up and provide long lasting energy. Proponents also say it keeps you alert and focused. It's delicious, healthy and less $$$ than a fancy Starbucks latte and a fantastic alternative to skipping breakfast or as a substitution for unhealthier morning options like a carb filled muffin or bagel.

Give it a go and let me know what you think!

Here's a simple health hack from and I have to say I couldn't agree more!

We've all heard the adage: "you are what you eat," but how often do you really stop to think about what that actually means? About 330 billion cells in your body are replaced daily, which is approximately 1% of all your cells. That means about every 100 days, 30 trillion cells will be replaced - the equivalent of a new you!

The food you eat is literally the building blocks for your cells. Imagine it like this, when your body digests food it breaks that food into essential building blocks, then your cells use those building blocks to make new cells for all of your body systems. It's a bit like breaking apart a Lego structure and then using those same pieces to build something completely new and different.

This is why eating a wide variety of whole foods is critical to how your body functions. It's also why eating a lot of processed foods, filled with additives, preservatives, chemicals and food dyes, is so detrimental. Franken foods confuse your cells and interfere with the integrity of the new cells being built. It's the difference between building a house of bricks and a house of wood laminate (you know, the fake stuff made from gluing wood pieces together).

So the next time you think about preparing food or having a snack remember, you are what you eat. You can be made of meats, poultry, seafood, eggs, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and nuts or you can be made of monosodium glutamate, artificial food coloring, sodium nitrite, guar gum, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, sodium benzoate, trans fats, and xanthan gum. The choice is up to you!
