It’s been a long road but today marks the official end of my yoga teacher training. With over a decade under my belt of practicing yoga, I have spent the past 6 months working towards achieving the highest designation possible for a yoga teacher. As of this afternoon I am officially a RYT® 500 with Yoga Alliance.

I’m also 95% done my class work to become a certified Ayurvedic Nutritionist, so you can expect to see some of that incorporated into my offerings at Woodlight Yoga.

For now, I’m going to take a moment to collect myself and find my footing in this new normal. I suddenly have time in my day again and I need to reintegrate myself into a life that doesn’t involve hours of learning.

A month ago we posted Ardha Adho Mukha Vrksasana (half handstand) to prep you towards full handstand. If you have been practicing the setup for the past month, you may be ready to move onto the second step - one legged handstand prep.

One-legged handstand prep is an important posture in yoga for building the strength and confidence for other inversions, such as handstand or forearm balance. It can be a challenging posture for beginners because of its inverted nature, and it requires flexibility in the chest, shoulders and legs.

Join me Tuesday evening for a free 60 minute live stream restorative yoga class.

Please have 2 blocks (or you can use books), 1 bolster (or couch cushions/pillows), and 2 blankets.

You can expect long (20 minute) holds, minimal cueing, and just a fully supported class.

Eka Pada Rajakapotasana is actually a variation of the advanced pose, One-Legged King Pigeon Pose. The two poses share similar alignment in the hips and, more important, an imperative to be approached thoughtfully and consciously. To avoid injury, approach Pigeon by first doing variations that will open the hips gradually and safely. Once your hips are open, you’ll be able to craft a well-balanced Pigeon that benefits your hips and lower back. If you practice it consistently, you’ll notice more ease in your lower half as you sit, walk, and stand.

Bonus tip: It’s common to experience intense sensations in the hip as the femur rotates outward in the hip socket. (For many people, this is in the fleshy part of the buttock; for others, it’s along the inner thigh.) Some feel a stretch along the front of the hip as the psoas lengthens. You do not, however, want to feel any sensations in your knee. If you do, come out of the pose immediately.

After finishing the anatomy and physiology part for my advanced yoga teacher training program, I’m ready to start opening up free classes in specialized styles of yoga.

The first four classes will be targeted towards expecting or new mothers.

First Trimester Vinyasa
Second Trimester Vinyasa
Third Trimester Vinyasa
Postnatal Vinyasa (targeted for women who are at least 6 to 8 weeks post partum)

I’ll be holding these classes throughout the remainder of this week and into the weekend. If you are an expectant or new mother and would like a class scheduled for a particular day and time, please reach out to me. I’d love to hold space for you at a time that is convenient to you.

Parivrtta Utkatasana is great way to strengthen and lengthen the leg muscles, this posture also lengthens and improves mobility in the spine. Practicing revolved chair will give a feeling of groundedness in the lower half of the body and open spaciousness in the upper body.

Bonus tip: Don’t let your knees move in front of your toes, to protect your knee joints. Keep pressing your shin bones back and weighting your heels, to keep your knees pressure free. Don’t let one knee slide in front of the other. Learn to stabilize your pelvis and lower back with the symmetry, allowing for a deeper and pain-free twist.

Utthita Trikonasana is a foundational yoga pose across almost every different style of yoga. You will almost certainly encounter it within your first few yoga classes and for years to come.

Bonus tip: It's fine to bring your right hand higher up your leg if that allows you to open your chest more—as long as it does not rest directly on your knee. You can use a yoga block as a rest for your lower hand as an alternative.

Ardha Adho Mukha Vrksasana is an inverted yoga posture, which can also be known as right angle pose at the wall or downward-facing dog at the wall.

Half handstand is an important posture in yoga for building the strength and confidence for other inversions, such as handstand or forearm balance. It can be a challenging posture for beginners because of its inverted nature, and it requires flexibility in the chest, shoulders and legs.

Bonus tip: You can also try putting your feet on a chair instead of the wall. Set a chair up against the wall with the seat facing away from the wall. You may want to place a blanket between the back of the chair and the wall so that the chair remains in place.
