Back pain with deadlifts or kettlebell swings?🤔

Do we really think this is a normal thing? Is the deadlift or kettlebell swing really the reason you have back pain? Honestly probably not!

Research is showing that deadlifting, kettlebell swings, and posterior chain strengthening actually help reduce chronic low back pain. This article from Berglund et. al is one example of this research. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25559899/

A more likely reason that your back hurts during these exercises is poor mechanics or movement patterns.

This video explains a very common fault during training which is locking your back in extension.

In this video we also cover an easy exercise you can do which is an eccentric (slow lowering ) kettlebell deadlift. 🔑 DON’T let your back over arch as you start to come down from the top of the deadlift.

Don’t shy away from deadlifts or kettlebell swings because of a fear of back pain. These can be great exercises for longer term health and pain free living!

We have a busy day tomorrow, and couldn’t be more excited!

We will have a tent with at the Run the Burg 5K. Make sure you stop by for some free movement analysis, dry needling, soft tissue work and post race stretching. We will also be raffling a 50% off evaluation!!

Later that morning we will be heading over to for their grand opening. This is definitely not going to be an event your going to want to miss out on. Mobilization with movement technique for low back and SI Joint pain.

This technique is great for improving extension of the sacral base.

The sacral base is the portion of the sacrum that forms a joint at the lower back with L5.

Pain with squatting especially during the first initial part of the motion one of the most common symptoms of this movement limitation.

Improving movement through the SIJ helps decrease pain through the low back and hip region.

Improve your performance on deadlifts, cleans, and sn**ches with this hip hinge primer.

Developing a proper hip hinge is key to performance in Olympic lifting and deadlifting.

The hip hinge engages the glutes and hamstrings to help develop power and push the hips into extension.

This allows the knees to clear gives a more vertical bar path, improving the lift.

This drill also helps prime the glutes and hamstrings. Adding it into your warm up on days with these lifts programmed will increase performance.

By developing a proper hip hinge we will also decrease the stress on the back and decrease post workout stiffness.

Lat stretch to improve overhead mobility🏋️‍♂️

Poor lat mobility is often a limiting factor in overhead and front rack lifts.

The lat is a large muscle that attaches on the fascia of your low back and runs to your shoulder.

A common compensation for tight lats to complete these lifts is to arch the low back.

This is why many people have low back pain after sn**ches and overhead squats. It’s also one of the main reasons people fail their cleans and front squats 🤯

Improving the mobility of the lat will allow for a better front rack and overhead position.

This improved position provides a better foundation to build weight from. It also decreases the risk for an injury especially overhead.

We want to give a huge shoutout to our client Adriana. She came to us with back pain that was affecting her running and CrossFit workouts. Last week she was able to run, deadlift, and do burpees without pain in her back. We can not begin to express how proud we are of her and all her hard work!

IT Band pain? It might actually be a muscle in your hip 🤯

The IT band is a large piece of facial tissue that attaches to your TFL muscle and your knee.

The TFL muscle sits on the outside and front of your hip. It functions to abduct, flex, and internally rotate your hip.

If this muscle gets tight or over worked it causes tension in the IT band.

This tension can cause pain from the knee to the outside of the hip or thigh.

To perform the muscle release take a lacrosse or tennis ball, find the bone that sticks out on the side of your hip, and go up and forward about a fist length.

Roll out and sit on tight spots for a minute on each side.

IT band pain can affect many areas of your life such as workouts, enjoying time with family, and work.

Dry needling for shoulder pain 🙌

Shoulder pain can be one of those frustrating injuries that affects almost everything we do.

This is a client of ours that was having pain when reaching overhead. She very active in functional fitness and hasn’t been able to participate as she would like.

Her shoulder pain also started to affect her day to day life with things like driving and typing.

After dry needling and correcting her movement pattern she was able to reach a over head head without pain.

Nice little engine builder from .

Yes, I am one of the weird people who prefers the bike over the rower🙋‍♂️

Definitely an are that I have struggled with in my fitness before. I love the sprint style workouts, but if the workout was sustained capacity, yeah not my favorite.

Making the commitment to work on this area has definitely made me feel better physically and mentally.

We only get one body, and I’m choosing to take care of mine and hopefully life a long healthy life with my wife and family.

These are just a few of the benefits of regular physical activity. If you have been avoiding it imagine all things you could be doing and how much better you could feel doing them.
