Did you know we spend approximately one-third of our lives sleeping?

So it is important that we pay attention to the amount and quality of sleep we get.

Patients with Parkinson's disease may experience sleep problems. Parkinson’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects about one million people in the United States and 10 million people worldwide. James Parkinson wrote an “Essay on the Shaking Palsy,”roughly two-hundred-years ago describing sleep dysfunction among people with Parkinson’s. It's important to note sleep disturbances can play a signifcant non-motor feature of this disease.

Some PD meds, like MAO-B inhibitors (selegiline, rasagiline, safanimide) and amantadine (a medication used to treat dyskinesia), have alerting properties and may make insomnia worse. These medications are usually taken earlier in the day, so they do not impact sleep. Sinemet does not usually have a big impact on sleep compared to dopamine agoniss.

Understanding your medications is key and it's important to speak with your neurologist to find the right balance specific for you.

Did you know our bodies are composed of roughly 60% water, give or take.

Has anyone ever told you to drink eight 8-ounces of water per day? There is little science behind the 8×8 rule but staying hydrated is critical for your health. Obviously, humans must consume a certain amount of water to survive. How much each individual consumes will vary based on age, gender and where someone lives.

How much water have you consumed in the last 24 hours? Are you feeling thirsty? Do you have a headache or migraine?
