One week your skin is clear and the next could mean painful cysts and congestion. The only thing doctors seem to do is prescribe birth control or antibiotics and that can cause gut issues and worsen hormonal imbalances. Here’s what I’ve learned in my struggle for clear skin.

📌Track your cycle using an app like “Flo.” This will help you understand your body better. You will notice ovulation can cause acne as well as before your period due to drastic hormone drops and surges.

📌If your breakouts are before your period begin to wash twice daily with a Salicylic Acid wash (Or whatever cleanser that suits you best.)

📌Exfoliate using Glycolic Acid in your toner. This helps remove any build up of cells. Pixi and The Ordinary make affordable options.

📌Spot treat before the breakouts with Benzoyl Peroxide and continue till after your cycle.

📌Niacinimide is the best for post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (pimple scaring) and to regulate sebum production. I use this twice a day. It pairs extremely well with Retinol.

📌Try to limit dairy and fried foods. I find they are foods that can cause inflammation.

📌 If you can feel a cyst do your best to pretend it isn’t there. These big boys never seem to come to a head and trying to squeeze could leave behind a bad scar. Leave it alone!

📌Stay calm. Once you understand your cycle you can better prepare mentally for the breakouts. Breathe! They will pass.
