These are challenging times.

And here is what I know: in challenging times, we have to take care of ourselves. And we have to take care of each other.

Taking care of ourselves means making sure we are eating, drinking, sleeping, and exercising intentionally. Staying connected with like-minded people. Talking to people who understand. And staying informed, but also taking breaks from the news and social media. It means reaching deep within ourselves, within whatever spiritual core we recognize. Recharging our yoga or meditation or morning prayer practices. Finding the behaviors that sustain us. And committing to doing them regularly. Intentionally.

Taking care of each other means staying connected to our families and communities. Making sure that the people around us are safe and feel supported. Offering gestures of kindness to strangers in our midst, to soften the hard edges of life. Doing one more thing each day for someone else. Being active citizens in this amazing moment in our democracy. And raising our voices so they can be heard.

In the three weeks since the election I have struggled, as many have, to find words that might be helpful. What I have found is inspiration – in the posts of friends, blogs from Pantsuit Nation, words of hope in passing. I would like, over the next few weeks, to pass some of these along. My attempt will be to focus on perspectives that have the potential to heal, not further divide, but by that I do not mean remaining silent about the dangers facing us.

To that end, let me pass along the advice that I read on Cat Zavis’s blog from the Network of Spiritual Progressives. She suggests taking as much time as you need to come back to your highest, most centered self, pointing out that “It will be impossible to heal, repair and transform our world from fear, hatred, rage, or shock” and telling us to each, in our own way, take the time we need to come home to ourselves.

This is, I believe, an excellent suggestion. Whatever your perspective on the election and whatever your views about our country going forward, we need to find ways to come together, with compassion and decency and mutual respect in order to move forward. Zavis says “We must refuse to demonize and hate and instead need to dig deep, very deep, to the core of our being – our beating hearts – to find a depth of love and fortitude.”
