Gaining Ground

Gaining Ground Gaining Ground grows organic produce for hunger relief with help from volunteers of all ages and abilities, who work and learn in our fields. For free.

We're also part of research studies to grow healthy soil systems through regenerative, no-till farming practices. Based in historic Concord, Massachusetts, Gaining Ground grows 125,000 pounds of organic produce for hunger relief with help from 2,500 volunteers of all ages and abilities, who work and learn in our fields. In short, we grow food and we give it away to people who need it. We work hard to grow healthy soil and high-quality produce, provide an exceptional experience to each volunteer, serve the needs of our recipients and maximize the generous support of our donors. Throughout the harvest season, produce from Gaining Ground’s farm goes to food pantries, meal programs and shelters in Greater Boston and Eastern Massachusetts. Our approach is local and sustainable—most of our produce is distributed within 20 miles of our farm and within 24 hours of harvest. Some groups use our produce to prepare a free meal distributed to people who need it. Others give it away as part of providing free food to people in need. In addition, we are participating in regional and national agricultural research projects to improve upon and expand methods of regenerative, no-till farming to grow healthy, more productive soils. These methods allow us to better withstand extreme weather events and can directly mitigate climate change by pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and putting it back into the soil, where it directly benefits crop health.

Fall Appeal Update: Almost there!

With an ambitious goal to raise $200,000 by December 31, we only have $21,780 left to go. Please help us increase food production next season so that we can provide more fresh, healthy food in 2026.

We are grateful to the many generous donors who have already stepped up to help feed our neighbors during this especially challenging time.

Donate online at gainingground.org/support-us/make-a-donation/ or by check, securities, or donor-advised fund. Thank you!

Harvesting mizuna! These Japanese mustard greens are a delicious and nutritious salad green that offers a peppery kick. A fast growing, come-again veggie that we can grow in the tunnels all winter for donation.

Look who showed up on the farm...The good folks from Winning Home!

Gaining Ground is grateful for the generous funding we receive from Winning Home, Inc. Their longtime annual support - since 2013! -helps provide nutritious vegetables and fruits to growing children throughout the region.

Cheers to Michael Maher, Robert Maguire, Chip Curran, and the rest of the Board of Directors at Winning Home, for their dedication to the health and wellbeing of children. Winning Home has been reaching out to children in need since 1898.

Hunger relief partners are pivotal to connecting Gaining Ground's fresh produce with people who need it.

On a recent visit to the Sudbury Community Food Pantry's new expanded facility, Gaining Ground learned first-hand about how the pantry has adapted to serve a growing number of people. We discussed the challenges of providing fresh produce and brainstormed ideas for making more healthy, fresh food accessible to people experiencing food insecurity.

The Sudbury Community Food Pantry is an impressive operation that is 100% volunteer-run. Our thanks to Chris and Tom for taking the time to welcome us and show us how you are helping to nourish people throughout MetroWest!

The DCU for Kids Charitable Foundation strives to improve the quality of life for children in need. One way they are doing just that is by helping Gaining Ground to provide nutritious food for children meal plans at both Bridge Boston Charter School in Roxbury, MA where students are experiencing economically and social disadvantages, and also at Community Teamwork/Head Start in Lowell where they use fresh GG produce to make daily breakfast, lunch, and snacks for toddlers in their daycare center and to distribute a free, weekly CSA to families at four pre-schools. We are grateful for this generous support in ensuring children have access to a healthy diet during their growing years.

With this first snow of the these winter months ahead, we’re reminded of how winter’s snowfall offers more than just a scenic view — it also plays a vital role in soil health!

Even when it only sticks around for a few days, snow acts as a natural mulch, insulating the soil and maintaining steady moisture and temperature levels.

Beneath the surface, microbes stay active, breaking down compost and plant debris left in our no-till beds. This process transforms nutrients into accessible forms for crops in the spring while also boosting microbial populations for even greater nutrient retention.

The snow itself is incredibly beneficial—pulling nitrogen from the air and slowly releasing it into the soil as it melts.

We’re always happy to see snowflakes in the air, helping us prepare the land for a healthy and abundant growing season ahead!
