"In the mid 1980s a woman in our church was in dire need of platelets and her two sons were not able to donate. I thought, "this is something I can do to help", so I made my appointment and donated my first platelets while living in AZ. Over the years I have donated platelets in FL, NC, AZ, NJ, NY, WV and now, having settled in Brevard County, I donate platelets regularly. About 18 months ago our daughter in CT was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and thankfully was cured in September 2024.

During her chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation she frequently needed all sorts of blood products. Though not living near her, I vicariously "paid it forward" and donated for someone needing platelets in Central Florida. In March of this year that same daughter was diagnosed with ALL (Leukemia) and her only hope was a stem cell transplant. Chemo began in early March, one of our sons was tested and determined to be a 100% match! The infusion of his stem cells just took place on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC. Since Amy's ALL discovery, I give platelets twice a month (or any time I am available) - sharing the gift of life with someone else in need. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be able to donate platelets and assist another person/family who are going through any kind of Cancer/Leukemia or Leukemia treatment."

You must be at least 𝟭𝟲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 to donate blood. Sixteen-year-olds must provide a signed parental or guardian consent form. In 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢, 𝟭𝟲- 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟳-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 are required to provide a signed consent form to donate.

As far as an age limit, you can never be too old to donate! 🩸

"My wife discovered a small lump in her breast which, after being diagnosed as cancerous, was removed by a lumpectomy. Sometime later we learned that the issue apparently still wasn't resolved and she had a mastectomy. By then, however, the cancer had metastasized to her liver and eventually it took her life at 48 years of age. Prior to her death she required several blood transfusions and ever since then I have tried to do my part by periodically donating blood. For a healthy person it's a small gift to give. For someone that needs blood it can be a life changer."

When Joe wanted to return to Afghanistan, his physical showed that he had cancer and he needed to start treatment immediately.

While Joe was able to recover quickly, he recognized that many cancer patients were not as fortunate and would require platelet transfusions to be healthy enough to continue their own treatment.

Joe has been donating platelets for nearly a decade now with no end in sight. He schedules his platelet donations months in advance, ensuring he is in the OneBlood donor chair every two weeks. “We’re all in this together.” said Joe. 💛
