Myth: The Juice Clense

It is a common belief that going on a juice cleanse can quickly shed pounds and melt fat. Additionally, fans of this practice claim it can alkalize (change the pH of) your blood and detoxify your liver and cells.

First, any significant weight loss as a result of a juice cleanse is coming mainly from water and potentially muscle. Juices are rich in vitamins and minerals but lack fiber, protein, and healthy fats. Important components to a healthy diet.

Second, the pH of blood is VERY tightly regulated. It must be maintained within a narrow range of 7.35-7.45 to ensure the proper functioning of metabolic processes and proper delivery of oxygen to tissues. Consuming juices will not change the pH of the blood.

Third, the liver and kidney's main purpose is to detoxify the body. Going on a juice cleanse is not going to enhance this process.

One day you’re going to be old.

You’re going to sit in a chair that’s harder to get out of than it used to be. Your hands will shake a little. The body that carried you through this life will be winding down. And you will think back.

You’ll think about right now. This exact stretch of your life. The years you’re living and barely noticing.

And one of two things will be true.

Either you’ll smile, because you spent these years becoming.
Because you trained when you didn’t feel like it. Because you kept your word. Because you were strong for the people who needed you strong. Because when life knocked you down you got up so many times that getting up became who you are.

Or you’ll ache. Because you waited. Because you scrolled. Because you kept telling yourself you’d start Monday and ran out of Mondays. Because you let the fear win and called it being realistic.

You don’t get these years back.

The body you have right now is the youngest it will ever be again. The energy you have today is more than you’ll have in ten years. The window is open right now and it is closing whether you move or not.

Most people waste it. They sleepwalk through the strongest years of their lives waiting for a feeling that never comes. Waiting to be ready. Waiting for permission. Waiting for the version of them that has it all figured out to show up and start living.
He’s not coming. There’s just you. Today. With this body and this morning and this choice.

So train. Not because you hate yourself. Because you respect the person you’re capable of becoming.

Lift the weight. Run the miles. Eat the food that fuels you. Sleep like it matters. Keep the promises you make to yourself in the dark when nobody is watching and nobody would know if you broke them.

Become someone your younger self would have idolized. Become someone your future self will thank.

The pain of discipline weighs ounces. The pain of regret weighs tons. Pick which one you carry. You already know which one lasts longer.

Lace up your shoes. Pick up the weight.
Go become who you are meant to be.

The protein myth:

The biggest nutrient timing myth is that you MUST consume protein within 30 minutes to an hour after your workout. This is not true. The benefit of protein consumption on enhancing muscle recovery is largely dependent on the last protein-rich meal you consumed. Additionally, while the benefits of protein consumption are most rapid in the first two hours following exercise, consumption beyond that time frame still provides considerable benefit.

Takeaway? Protein consumption at any time is beneficial. If it is feasible to consume protein immediately after your workout, this may be optimal. If you can't consume protein for a few hours after your workout, it will still be beneficial.

Supplements are a multibillion-dollar industry. While they can help, they are not always necessary. Something to note about supplements is that they are not all tested for banned substances or label accuracy/purity.

Therefore, before choosing to consume a supplement you should check to see if you are consuming a reliable product. This is why we carry Thorne here at BAM!

For performance-enhancing supplements you should look for these three logos:

For vitamins and individual nutrients look for USP verified marks. Takeaway… Supplements can help fill the gaps of nutrients you may be lacking in your diet. However, you cannot out supplement a bad diet.
