Horse owners:
When you lose your horse, your veterinarian and farrier share in that pain with you. We get to know your horse and we bond with your horse. So please, when you lose a horse, don't go on Facebook and blame your veterinarian. I see it all the time. Although, it is getting a lot better. When you go on Facebook and blast your veterinarian, it makes it even harder on them. We are losing equine veterinarians hand over fist as it is. There's a reason there is such a high su***de rate among veterinarians.
It's never pretty when a farrier cries. And I promise you, I cry with you. Sometimes you see it and sometimes you don't. When I see your horse every 5 weeks, eventually me and your horse become friends. So when you lose a horse, I lose a friend. It's one of the hardest parts of this job. We can tough our way through the heat, the disrespect, the fighting people to pay us and the physical pain. But it's always tough when you lose a friend.
Veterinarians and farriers all go through burnout phases. I am currently going through a burnout phase and I am very grumpy. The heat, the physical pain, a lot of disrespect, and fighting people for money is taking its toll at the moment. However, I've been doing this a long time and I will get through my burnout phase. I will go on and continue to help horses. I will do this job until my body says I can't do it anymore. And that's usually how a farrier's career will end. Not because we retired a certain age but because our body says, you're done. Now, when younger farriers go through their first burnout a lot of them don't make it to the other side. They will quit and go do something else. There's not a lot of young people wanting to work this hard anymore. So there's not a lot of new farriers coming into this industry. It's the same situation with equine veterinarians. We lose them to small animal because small animal gives them a better life and more money. Just some thoughts I wanted to share with the horse owners out there. Please be kind. We make our jobs look easy but I promise it is not. Be kind to your veterinarians.
