Don't miss out on the free group that is meeting every Monday at 5pm! And 𝑷𝑳𝑬𝑨𝑺𝑬 𝑺𝑯𝑨𝑹𝑬!!!

Welcome to our new trauma-focused group experience based on the powerful book Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life by Steven C. Hayes and Spencer Smith. This group is designed to help you break free from the grip of painful thoughts, emotions, and past experiences that may be holding you back. Through guided exercises, open discussion, and practical tools for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we’ll begin the process of healing by reconnecting with what truly matters to you.

This is more than just a group, it's a space to reclaim your life, step by step, with the support of others on the same journey.

We love you!

Children may not always have the words to explain what they’re feeling—but that doesn’t mean they aren’t carrying deep emotions. At Refuge Counseling Centers, we create an environment where kids feel safe, heard, and gently supported as they begin their healing journey.

One parent recently shared:
“𝑴𝒚 𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒂 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒑𝒊𝒔𝒕 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆... 𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒍𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒂 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒏 𝒖𝒑 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔.”

That’s the heart of what we do—meet children right where they are, with compassion and patience, so they feel safe enough to share the things they may not be able to say at home or in other settings. Sometimes healing begins with a single conversation. Other times, it starts with a child knowing they don’t have to explain everything—they can just be.

Whether your child is dealing with anxiety, grief, family transitions, or past trauma, our trained, Christ-centered therapists use tools like play therapy, age-appropriate coping strategies, and emotional regulation skills to gently guide them toward peace.

💛 We know it’s not always easy to ask for help. But taking that first step could make all the difference—for you and your child.

Marriage is hard work—and when trauma or PTSD is involved, it can feel nearly impossible. The distance grows. Communication breaks down. And sometimes, both partners feel like giving up.

But we’ve seen time and again that God is still in the business of restoration. One couple recently shared:

“𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒈𝒆… 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒂 𝒎𝒊𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒍𝒆. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝑻𝑺𝑫 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑮𝑹𝑬𝑨𝑻𝑳𝒀 𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒅… 𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒈𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒓 𝒘𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒈𝒖𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒖𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒑𝒉𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒋𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏. 𝑾𝒆 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒔𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒘𝒂𝒍𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒖𝒑𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆.”

This couple’s story is one of so many we’re privileged to witness here at Refuge! Our counselors walk alongside couples with grace, professionalism, and a deep understanding of trauma-informed care. And when restoration happens, we gladly point all credit to the One who truly heals: Jesus.

💛 Whether you’re facing trauma, infidelity, resentment, or simply years of disconnection—there is hope for your marriage. You don’t have to carry it alone.

“Christ… will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” — 1 Peter 5:10

If PTSD or unresolved pain is hurting your marriage, you don’t have to wait for things to get worse. Let’s begin the healing work together.

We love you!

Over the last several weeks we have discussed EMDR therapy. We hope it has been informative for you!

Maybe you’ve tried to move on from something painful, but it still finds a way to creep into your thoughts…

Maybe you avoid certain places, people, or conversations because they stir up emotions that feel too big to handle…

Maybe you’re just tired of feeling stuck in anxiety, shame, or fear—and you want something to finally work.

If any of that sounds familiar, EMDR therapy could be a powerful next step in your healing. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is especially helpful for people who’ve experienced trauma, abuse, grief, or emotional wounds that haven’t fully healed—even years later. It’s also a great fit for those who struggle with anxiety, panic attacks, or overwhelming thoughts tied to specific experiences.

Here at Refuge, our EMDR-trained therapists are here to walk with you, offering compassion, clinical expertise, and faith-based care every step of the way.

You don’t have to carry it alone. We love you!

One of the most common questions we hear is: “What actually happens during EMDR therapy?” And it’s a great question—because understanding the process can ease anxiety and help you feel more prepared.

EMDR therapy follows a structured 8-phase approach that’s designed to gently guide you through healing at a pace that feels safe. Here's a simple breakdown:

1️⃣ History Taking – We learn about your life story and the struggles you’re currently facing. You’ll never be rushed or pressured.
2️⃣ Preparation – We equip you with grounding and calming tools so you feel supported throughout the process.
3️⃣ Assessment – We identify the specific memory (or memories) that are connected to your current emotional or physical distress.
4️⃣ Desensitization – This is where you process the memory using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping), helping your brain reprocess it in a healthier way.
5️⃣ Installation – We help you replace negative beliefs (“I’m not safe,” “I’m not enough”) with healthier, more truthful ones rooted in your God-given worth.
6️⃣ Body Scan – We notice where your body might still be holding tension or trauma, helping you release it.
7️⃣ Closure – Each session ends with grounding to ensure you feel calm and safe before leaving.
8️⃣ Reevaluation – At future sessions, we check in to see how you’re doing and continue the healing journey as needed.

This process might sound clinical, but at Refuge, EMDR is deeply personal. We combine this method with the heart of our mission: creating a Christ-centered, safe, and hope-filled environment where healing can happen at your pace.

EMDR is often known for its success in treating PTSD, but it’s so much more than that. At Refuge Counseling Centers, we’ve seen EMDR therapy bring healing in many areas of life—especially where people feel stuck in emotional pain they just can’t talk their way out of.

Here are just a few of the issues EMDR can help with:
▪Anxiety – those racing thoughts and constant feelings of unease
▪Depression – especially when tied to unresolved trauma or grief
▪Phobias & Panic Attacks – fears that feel bigger than you can explain
▪Chronic Pain or Illness – where emotional wounds show up physically
▪Childhood Trauma – even when you thought you’d “moved on”
▪Sexual Assault, Abuse, or Violence – helping to release shame and fear
▪Combat Trauma or First Responder Stress – reclaiming peace and identity

Because EMDR helps the brain reprocess overwhelming or traumatic experiences, it can bring relief in situations where traditional talk therapy hasn’t worked—or hasn’t gone deep enough. And the best part? You don’t have to retell every painful detail to experience relief.

Here at Refuge, our EMDR-trained therapists are here to guide you with compassion and care.

One of the most amazing things about our brains is that they’re designed to heal—just like a cut on your skin. But when something traumatic happens, that natural healing process can get “stuck.” The memory may not get processed in a healthy way, leaving you with flashbacks, anxiety, emotional numbness, or a sense of being “triggered” by things that others wouldn’t even notice.

That’s where EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) comes in. EMDR helps “unstick” the brain by engaging it in bilateral stimulation—often through side-to-side eye movements or tapping—while you safely recall parts of the painful memory.

This helps your brain finish what it started: processing that event so it no longer hijacks your thoughts, emotions, or body. You don’t forget the memory, but it loses its power over you. It becomes something that happened to you, not something that’s still happening in you.
Many clients describe the process as a shift from chaos to clarity—from feeling overwhelmed by the past to feeling more present, calm, and hopeful.

Here at Refuge, we combine this powerful method with a trauma-informed, faith-centered approach to help you experience true restoration.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a powerful, research-backed therapy approach designed to help people heal from trauma, painful memories, anxiety, and more. What makes EMDR different from traditional talk therapy is how it works with your brain’s natural healing processes.

Here’s how it works in simple terms: During an EMDR session, you’ll briefly focus on a distressing memory while also engaging in bilateral stimulation—often side-to-side eye movements or gentle tapping. This helps your brain reprocess the memory in a way that takes the intensity and emotional charge out of it. You’re not erasing the memory—you’re helping your brain store it in a healthier, less painful way.

EMDR can be life-changing, especially for people who have experienced trauma that still feels “fresh” years later.

Here at Refuge, we see EMDR as a beautiful tool that works hand-in-hand with faith. We believe that God can use this method to bring clarity, calm, and healing to places that once felt too broken or too heavy to carry.

We love you!
