What is the difference between depression and sadness?

It can be difficult to distinguish between sadness and depression.

Sadness is a normal emotion that everyone feels. We all experience events in our lie that can trigger sadness such as the death of a loved one. Sadness will come and go and is often temporary. More often than not, sadness will not impact daily life functioning more than a few days to a week (thinking of pet loss...)

Depression on the other hand usually lasts longer than 2 weeks and may not be triggered by a specific event. Depression will significantly interfere with and impact your daily life and ability to function.

If you are struggling, we are here. Call us today to set up an appointment-936-648-5379

Emotions like anxiety, anger, and sadness often get labeled as “bad” or “negative.” But the truth is—they’re not enemies. They’re signals. Each one is trying to get your attention and tell you something important.

Instead of pushing them down or shaming yourself for feeling them, try pausing and asking:
💭 “What is this emotion pointing me toward?”
💭 “What need or boundary is it highlighting?”
💭 “What is this trying to teach me about myself?”

When we listen with curiosity instead of judgment, emotions become guides instead of burdens. They can lead us toward deeper self-awareness, healing, and growth.

Sometimes, one person’s decision to begin counseling becomes the spark that changes an entire family. Healing doesn’t just stop with the individual—it ripples outward. We see it all the time.

This is the beauty of Christ-centered counseling: it doesn’t just treat symptoms—it uncovers root causes, heals old wounds, and creates space for deeper connection, understanding, and grace. Families begin to see each other differently. Conversations change. Patterns shift. And what once felt broken can begin to feel whole again.

Here at Refuge, we walk with individuals, couples, and families through the messy middle of real life—because we believe God doesn’t just want healing for you—He desires restoration for your entire household, generation after generation.

We love you!

Don't miss out on the free group that is meeting every Monday at 5pm! And 𝑷𝑳𝑬𝑨𝑺𝑬 𝑺𝑯𝑨𝑹𝑬!!!

Welcome to our new trauma-focused group experience based on the powerful book Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life by Steven C. Hayes and Spencer Smith. This group is designed to help you break free from the grip of painful thoughts, emotions, and past experiences that may be holding you back. Through guided exercises, open discussion, and practical tools for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we’ll begin the process of healing by reconnecting with what truly matters to you.

This is more than just a group, it's a space to reclaim your life, step by step, with the support of others on the same journey.

We love you!

It’s incredible how movement impacts the mind. Research shows that even small amounts of activity can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, boost your mood, and help you feel more grounded.

And here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be complicated. A short walk, stretching in your living room, dancing to your favorite song, or riding your bike can make a noticeable difference. Just 10 minutes can shift your perspective and bring a sense of calm to your day.

Which is your favorite way to move?

Not all healing looks the same—and neither should therapy.

At Refuge Counseling Centers, we know that every person walks in with a different story, a different struggle, and a different set of needs. That’s why we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach.

Here are a few of the evidence-based methods we use:
✔️ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Helping clients change patterns of negative thinking and behavior.
✔️ EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) – A powerful tool for healing trauma and anxiety.
✔️ Play Therapy – A safe and effective way for children (and even adults) to process emotions through play.

No matter what brings you through our doors—whether it’s trauma, relationship issues, parenting struggles, or something you can’t quite name—we’re here to walk with you through it all.

We love you!

It’s easy to underestimate the power of a simple check-in.
But the truth is—connection can be life-saving.

When someone is struggling with their mental health, isolation only adds to the weight. Loneliness can whisper lies like “No one cares” or “I’m too much.” But a single moment of connection—a text, a call, a few honest minutes—can remind someone they’re not alone.

You don’t need the perfect words. Just your presence.
You never know the impact a 10-minute check-in can make.

We love you!

There’s something powerful about returning to the same place for care—year after year, season after season. One family recently shared:

“𝑹𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒈𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒚 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚’𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝟓 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔... 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒘𝒆’𝒗𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒔 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕-𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅.”

This kind of trust is not something we take lightly. Here at Refuge, we consider it a sacred honor to walk with individuals and families through many chapters of life—whether it's navigating grief, trauma, parenting, relationship struggles, or simply growing in emotional and spiritual maturity.

Over time, the counseling room becomes more than a place to process pain—it becomes a place of refuge, restoration, and ongoing transformation. Our goal isn’t just short-term relief; it’s long-term healing rooted in both clinical excellence and unshakable faith.

We believe that lasting change happens when therapy is consistent, Christ-centered, and tailored to your unique journey—and we’re committed to showing up for you every step of the way.

We love you!
