Calm in the Chaos
I keep thinking about this little girl I met in Buyengo village, Uganda. Her mom brought her to us, asking if there was anything we could do to help her. She is blind AND deaf. She doesn't speak. I noticed that while she was gentle, she seemed to have some agitation, perhaps feeling the crowd surrounding her in the gathering area where we were gifting a home to a deserted widow.
I asked Wendy for some Stress Away. Then I offered it to the little girl. At first she backed away. Then she slowly moved towards it and began to smile. I put some in her hand, rubbed her hands together and held them over her nose. She calmed down and smiled more. Her mom also began to smile as she watched. The little girl began to lick the oil. We pulled her hands away to show her to just smell it. Either way, I knew it was safe for her to lick and assured her mom of it.
The little girl was no longer restless the whole time, even as the crowd became more excited about the house when we cut the rope and handed over the keys.
We couldn't rescue her from her situation but at least we could make her day. If I had my own Stress Away with me, I would have given it to the momma. I hope to do so next time I'm in Uganda.
