May is here, and so is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month! 🗣️👂✨

All month long, we’re celebrating the power of communication—whether it’s finding your voice, building language, strengthening literacy, or supporting hearing health.

This month gives us a moment to reflect on the meaningful work being done in our field and the impact communication has on every life we touch. 💜

📚 Pathways to Reading: A Dyslexia Family Night Recap 📚
On April 23rd, we had the privilege of hosting our Pathways to Reading event, bringing together families, vendors, and literacy professionals for an evening of learning and connection.

Families heard from knowledgeable presenters and had the opportunity to ask questions during an engaging Q&A, gaining valuable insights into supporting children with dyslexia. They also explored resources shared by our wonderful vendors, helping connect them with tools and support beyond the event.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this night so meaningful—we loved being part of your journey in building stronger reading pathways! 💜

A proud day for our CSD program at the UCA Research Symposium 🎓✨

A few weeks ago our undergraduate students represented both the Communication Sciences and Disorders program and the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences as they presented their capstone projects at the UCA Research Symposium. Their hard work, dedication, and passion for the field were evident in each presentation.

We love seeing our students share their knowledge and represent our program so well 💬💜

💜 We loved welcoming alumna Sunni Cottrell, M.S., CCC-SLP, University of Central Arkansas CSD Class of 2012, back to speak with our Clinical Methods students!

Sunni shared insights on PRN work, teletherapy, home health, and travel therapy, offering real-life scenarios, engaging stories, and honest perspectives on the pros and cons of each setting for new graduates entering the field. Her practical wisdom and enthusiasm gave students valuable exposure to the many pathways available in Speech-Language Pathology.

We love seeing our alumni give back and help develop the next generation of SLPs. Experiences like this remind us how powerful mentorship and professional connection can be.

Interested in collaborating with our program? We always encourage clinicians to start by accepting a student and learning alongside them—but we’re open to creative partnerships and would love to hear your ideas. Let’s connect!

✨ Our University of Central Arkansas Communication Sciences and Disorders students were incredibly well represented at the Engaged Arkansas Conference!

Congratulations to Abigail Bone, Emma Pasierb, Avenley Kelley, Emmie Balch, and Kimberly Gomez for presenting their community-based service-learning research, Reciprocal Learning in Action: Strengthening Cultural Competence and Literacy Through University-Community Service-Learning Partnerships. Their presentation highlighted the impact of reciprocal learning and the power of student-led research in community engagement.

This experience was especially meaningful because it was entirely student-led, with faculty serving in a minimal mentoring role. These students demonstrated professionalism, insight, and a deep commitment to service-learning scholarship. Special recognition to Avenley, Emmie, and Kimberly on their first undergraduate conference presentation — an outstanding accomplishment! 👏

We are proud to see our students representing CSD and University of Central Arkansas so well while contributing to conversations around cultural competence, literacy, and community partnerships.

🐾 Once a Bear, Always a Bear! 🐾

It’s always a fantastic day when we get to welcome our alumni back to campus to inspire the next generation!

A huge thank you to Courtney (Craft) Jackson (M.S. Class of 2017) for visiting our Intro to Communication Sciences and Disorders class today. Courtney shared her expertise and passion for her work with autism and AAC at In-Sync Pediatric Therapy Center.

Our students loved hearing firsthand how the lessons they're learning today turn into impactful careers tomorrow. Thank you for giving back to the pack, Courtney!

Wrapping up another incredible semester of clinic 🗣️✨

Our 1st-year graduate clinicians have been hard at work building their foundations through on-campus sessions, while our 2nd-years have taken their skills into the real world during off-campus placements. No matter the setting, our clinicians have spent the past few months learning, growing, and making a meaningful impact with every interaction.

Here’s to the skills gained, the confidence built, and the difference made—both in and out of the clinic 💬💜

The UCA SLHC sprung into a little friendly competition this week 🌸💐

During the last week of therapy, our grad students and faculty traded in their clipboards for beads and battled it out in a clinic-wide game of Rock, Paper, Scissors! 🪨📄✂️ Each win meant collecting more beads—and the stakes kept blooming higher with every round.

After lots of laughs, surprises, and a whole lot of strategy, Mrs. Weese came out on top and took home the grand prize: a Chick-fil-A gift card 🐔🏆

Ending the semester with connection, joy, and just a little bit of competition—now that’s what we call a full-circle spring moment 🌷
