This is a good article on a topic that has unfortunately become one of the most common causes of fatalities in the workplace, especially for women. It’s not a simple issue, and it’s not a concentrated one either.

If you aren’t addressing this throughout all levels of your organization with a multifaceted and systematic program, you are likely not addressing this risk adequately.

There is nothing more important than your team’s safety, so be sure to make it a top priority.

Although the Subpart P regulations and most excavation safety trainings primarily discuss trench hazards related to cave-ins and collapse, don’t forget there are also many other hazards present in trenches that we don’t always do a great job accounting for.

This recent tragedy is a prime example of this.

Yet another trench fatality that was 100% preventable. The trench fatality rate continues upon its 6 year upward trend.

Remember, if you are trenching there are many requirements that MUST be met. Some of which include the responsibilities set forth for the competent person on these job sites.

If you or any of your employees do not fully understand the legal requirements and best practices associated with trenching operations, please seek training!

We offer a trenching safety class designed for those currently serving as competent persons or those who may serve those roles in the future.

In our various trainings, when we talk about the current state of the U.S. legal environment for employers, we aren’t kidding.

Unfortunately, this is a prime example of how much focus we should place on our specific organization’s defensibility efforts.

A civil jury found Werner Enterprises negligent in a 2014 crash in Texas that killed a child and left several others injured. The jury awarded nearly $90 million to the Houston, Texas family involved in the crash.

Despite OSHA Subpart P Trenching/Excavation regulations being on the books for almost 30 years these senseless deaths continue to happen! Trenching deaths in the U.S. occur almost once per week now. Cave-in deaths and injuries are 100% preventable! No exceptions.

This article also proves the point that you have more to worry about than “just an OSHA fine.” There are civil and criminal ramifications for not knowing or following the rules!
