REMEMBERING L/CPL GORE

It is hard to believe that five years has passed since we lost L/Cpl. Melton “Fox” Gore. We miss him, and will continue to do so. His absence will forever be felt in our department.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues as we remember his warmth and spirit.

Please join us in remembering his service and legacy within HCPD and the Horry County community.

REMEMBERING THOSE WE’VE LOST

Throughout the year, HCPD officers, families, and friends pay tribute to the members of our department that we have lost. For those who knew, worked with, and loved these officers, there is not a day that goes by that they are not in our thoughts.

This year, we plan to honor all of our fallen officers during National Police Week which will be from May 10 – May 16, 2026.

We will have more details to share closer to then, but we wanted to inform our community of this update as we remember the life and service of L/Cpl. Melton “Fox” Gore this week.

KEEP PETS WARM

The cold weather returns tonight and stays through the week.

Under Horry County Government Ordinance 4-3: ‘Care and Treatment’, all animal owners have a duty to provide a proper shelter for their animals, particularly during extreme weather, including those times when the temperature is 45 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.

"Proper shelter" is defined as an "outdoor house-like structure appropriate for the size and number of animals which will keep a non-aquatic animal dry, out of the direct path of winds, out of direct sun, and at a reasonable temperature that is healthful for the animal."

A cold-weather outdoor shelter must also have a windbreak at the entrance, and adequate, suitable, clean bedding material to provide insulation and promote retention of body heat.

HELP A HEART

These heartworm-positive pets are looking for homes! Heartworm can be a reason that pets stay in shelters longer... and we want to change that.

Any heartworm-positive pet adopted from the ACC before March 1 will receive treatment at no cost through the ACC clinic. Normally, we charge $500 for treatment.

We want these pets to find loving homes -- can you open your heart and home to an animal in need?

Starting this Thursday with wonderful news 🐾
Our friend Shyloh (now Ovi) has been adopted! Ovi was the other pet that MLK9 Myrtle Beach fostered from us to train.
Happy tails to Ovi and his new family!

Looking to adopt? Visit the Animal Care Center! We are open 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. & 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. today.

🐾 HAPPY ADOPTION UPDATE! 🐾

We are thrilled to share that formerly “Shyloh,” now officially “Ovi,” has been ADOPTED and is absolutely loving life with his new family! ❤️

After spending time with us working on basic obedience and manners, Ovi found the perfect home where he’s already settling in, soaking up love, and showing off his goofy personality. Seeing him surrounded by smiles is exactly why we do what we do.

A huge thank you to Horry County Animal Care Center for partnering with us, and an even bigger thank you to Ovi’s amazing new family for giving him the forever home he deserves.

This is the best kind of update 🐶🏡
Congratulations, Ovi — we can’t wait to see you thrive!

We appreciate the hard work of the Horry County Police Department Environmental Services officers.

MONTHLY CALL VOLUME REPORT

In December 2025, HCPD's Environmental Services officers had 1,058 animal-related calls for service.

The officers who respond to these calls are specifically assigned to investigate animal-related issues and educate community members on local animal-related ordinances.

During the month, 147 animals were picked up, and 39 charges were issued against offenders.

In total for 2025, Environmental Officers responded to 11,915 calls for service, picked up 2,151 animals, and issued 497 charges.

The total number of animal-related calls includes a variety of call types. Just like every general patrol call is not an emergency (some are non-emergency assistance or even for special/community events), every animal call is not for a crime.

Just as you plan for your pets in hurricane season, be sure to include your pets in your emergency escape plans.

Check out this 'Speaking on Safety' from our friends at Horry County Fire Rescue

SPEAKING ON SAFETY - CONSIDER PETS DURING EMERGENCY ESCAPE PLANS

An emergency occurs in your residence. There's a lot of commotion, maybe alarms, smoke and yelling.

Your pet is likely not going to know what's going on. They could become overly excited, too, and exit as quickly as possible, running far away, potentially into nearby traffic.

Always include consideration for your dogs and cats (and other pets!) in your emergency escape plans, especially having leashes and harnesses near your exits so you can secure them and get everyone out as safely and efficiently as possible.

It never hurts to have a few extra around, as the additional time it takes to find them in an emergency could be crucial.

Also talk about emergency pet plans ahead of time with all occupants of your home so they can kick the plan into action if needed.

HCFR cares about your safety, and your pet's!
