I want to clear up some misconceptions about the closure of offices in the state of Virginia. There is misinformation circulating that the Governor of Virginia has issued an order to close medical offices 3/25/20. This is NOT TRUE!

The order of the governor and the state heath commissioner is as follows:

"NOW THEREFORE, the Governor and the State Health Commissioner hereby issue this Order prohibiting all inpatient and outpatient surgical hospitals licensed under 12 VAC 5-410, free-standing endoscopy centers, physician's offices, and dental, orthodontic, and endodontic offices in the Commonwealth from providing procedures and surgeries that require PPE, which if delayed, are not anticipated to cause harm to the patient by negatively affecting the patient's health outcomes, or leading to disability or death. This does not include outpatient visits in hospital-based clinics."

This means that all medical offices, endoscopy centers, dental offices, etc. cannot perform procedures that require the use of PPE unless the procedure meets the requirements as set forth by the Governor. It means that orthopedists cannot continue to perform elective joint replacements.

Primary care offices, such as Boykins Family Practice, will continue to be open. We have encouraged our patients to call first so that they can be screened prior to arrival. Non-essential appointments are being delayed and prescriptions will be called in. As always, please call our office with any questions. The number is 757 654 9111 or 252 585 1134. Plese be patient as we have been inundated with calls.

This is an extremely busy time as I continue to assist Northampton Health Department with COVID-19 testing. Please continue to shelter at home and practice social distancing. Continue to wash your hands frequently and sanitize surfaces with bleach. Do your part to stop the spread of false information. Please refer to reputable web sites, such as CDC, for accurate information.

Be safe and be kind to each other.

As of 5:00 pm Sunday March 22, there are 322 cases in NC with no deaths. There are no current POSITIVE cases in Northampton, Halifax, or Bertie counties. In VA, there are 221 cases with 3 deaths. There are no POSITIVE reported cases in Southampton county; Isle of Wight county has one case.

Please continue to follow the guidelines as suggested by the CDC and your local health department. Requirements for testing are now fever, shortness of breath and cough. There is no longer a requirement for travel to an endemic region or close contact with a POSITIVE person. The COVID-19 virus has now been shown to have community transmission. Please consult the health department or your local physician for recommendations regarding testing.

Secondary to the large # of tests being perfomed, it is taking up to 7-10 days to get test results from the labs. While testing is in progress, please quarantine at home. Also, testing requires the use of PPE (personal protective equipment) which is in short supply. Please stay home and contact your physician for guidance. If you have no symptoms, you do not need to be tested. if you think you have been in contact with a known case, quarantine at home. if you develop symptoms, please contact your physician.

Please continue social distancing. If you can work from home, please do so. Over the next 2-3 weeks, the # of cases will rise exponentially. Mild cases can be treated at home. Again, consult with your physician for guidance. Wash your hands frequently and continue to disinfect surfaces. As always, please call our office for guidance. I will continue to work with Mr. Andy Smith of the Northampton County HD to provide testing for appropriate cases. In addition, I will be assisting the staff at Southampton Memorial Hospital to treat the expected influx of patients.

God bless
Frank Taylor

In response to the COVID-19 virus, I am asking that all patients with fever, upper respiratory symptoms/cough, and flu-like symptoms to please stay home. Call the office at 252 585-1134 to report your symptoms. Do not go to the hospital unless you are seriously ill. This virus must be contained. If you test POSITIVE, you can usually be treated at home. Going to the hospital will potentially infect several other people.Based on CDC guidelines, we will determine whether you need to be tested. If you need to be tested, I will either come to your house or send a response team from the Northampton County Health Department to perform testing. If you are tested, a mandatory quarantine would be in effect. If you test NEGATIVE, the quarantine is lifted. Testing usually takes 24-48 hours. If you test POSITIVE, a mandatory 14 day quarantine will be in effect. At the end of 14 days, repeat testing will be performed. Please take this quarantine seriously as this is the only way to prevent the spread of the virus.

Over the next several weeks, we will be quite busy with testing. As the Medical Director of the health department, I will work closely with Andy Smith, Director of the Northampton County Health Department, and his response team to perform testing and evaluate the need to test potential patients. As of today, there are no confirmed POSITIVE tests in Northampton County. Please refer to the Health Department or me with questions; there is a lot of misinformation on social media.

This is not the time to panic.Use common sense, Stay at home. Wash your hands frequently. Sanitize. 5 tsp of bleach in one quart of water will kill the virus. Make this solution daily and disinfect door k***s, bathroom fixtures, hand rails, etc. Keep your hands away from your face.

God bless
Frank Taylor, MD

The Boykins office still has a few of the high-dose influenza vaccine. If you have not received your flu shot, i highly recommend that you get it now.

Allison Emerson, FNP has resigned her position at Boykins Family Practice. Our staff wishes her well at her new job. Dr. Taylor will now see patients in the Boykins office. Please call Abby for an appointment.

Flu shots will be available on Tuesday, September 3 at both the Conway office and the Boykins office. No appointment is necessary. Just walk in and get your immunization. Flu shots will be available from 8 AM until 3 PM. I may be a dinosaur, but I firmly believe that immunizations should be done at a physician's office and not at a big box pharmarcy. But, that's just my opinion. Anyway, just make sure you get a flu shot!!

ALS Night at the Edenton Steamers game on July 26, 2019. That's me, Tommy Harrell and Ms. Helen Hunter (Jim Hunter's wife) prior to the game. We sponsor the jerseys for the game and auction them off afterwards. The Perquimans chapter of the Jim "Catfish" Hunter ALS Foundation raised over $3800 that night in the auction! We have been sponsoring the jersey night for several years. Thanks to Joan Hunter for allowing us to participate with such a great charity! The 21st annual softball tournament and silent auction will be held Sept. 27-29 at Winfall (near Hertford). Hope to see everyone there!
