People with psoriasis have a genetic tendency to develop it. If someone in your family has this skin disease, you may have the genes to develop it. Even with the right genes, there still needs to be something that triggers the disease.

Triggers could include a physical illness, skin injury, extreme stress or a particular medication. Psoriasis triggers are either short-lived or life-long. If it is life-long, there are often treatments to control it.

80% of sun damage is typically acquired before the age of 18. It is recommended that you and your family have a full body scan every year to examine any changes with your skin. If you haven't already, schedule a full body exam with your dermatologist.

Many people say that the itch is the most bothersome of all their psoriasis symptoms. To relieve the itch, dermatologists give their patients the following tips:

- Treat your psoriasis
- Remove scale
- Limit shower time
- Use moisturizer
- Skip hot baths
- Moisturize instead of scratch
- Try an itch-relieving product
- Apply a cool compress

UV rays aren't harmful just during the summer, but all year round. It is important to know the 5 S's of Sun Safety:

- Slip on a shirt.
- Slop on sunscreen of SPF 30+ every 2 hours.
- Slap on a hat.
- Slide on sunglasses.
- Seek shade between 10am and 4pm.

These 5 simple tips can help protect our skin from any future damage caused by the sun's UV rays.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, and Melanoma is the most aggressive and potentially life-threatening type. The good news is Melanoma is highly treatable when detected early.

Key preventative measures include:

👨‍⚕️ Yearly skin checks by your dermatologist
☀️ Daily protection from harmful UV rays

PINK OUT DAY! 💟

Georgia was very PINK yesterday! Our offices all over the state wore pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Did you know that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? While you can’t prevent cancer, it is important to be proactive about your health. When breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100%. Early detection includes doing monthly breast self-exams, and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms.

To our own survivors & all breast cancer fighters, Georgia Dermatology stands with you! Lets keep spreading awareness and fighting for a cure!
