For those of you who know me, you know that I love the animated movie, Inside Out. I reference it often with clients to demonstrate how all emotions are purposeful and needed. So, when I learned that a sequel was coming out, I was so excited! I took my two teenage sons to see it last week and just wanted to share a few take aways:
- Our memories (disturbing and/or traumatic) can turn into core beliefs. Core beliefs are rigid, inflexible ways of thinking about ourselves that lie right under the level of consciousness. They can guide our behaviors without even realizing they are there. Some examples are: I'm not good enough, I'm unlovable and I can't trust anyone.
- It's important to get back to our true essence while going through hardship and challenges. This is the core of who we are or our true nature.
- Suppressing feelings only leads to more difficulties, instead we should acknowledge and accept all of our emotions, even the heavy ones.
- All of our feelings: joy, sadness, anger, anxiety, embarrassment, fear, disgust, etc. can coexist. We can give ourselves permission to feel ALL of them without judging ourselves for feeling them.
- The hormonal changes of puberty can impact one's emotional state, leading to feelings expression in a new and stronger way.
- It's challenging for tweens and teens to navigate friendships and their social environments at times, this can be a time where people pleasing and approval addiction can become more apparent.
I also thought the movie illustrated the personification of anxiety and a panic attack in a clever and accurate way. So, if you haven't seen it yet, please check it out!
