Congratulations to our surgical team! Piedmont Rockdale was named a Blue Distinction Center for knee replacement, hip replacement, and spine surgery by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia.

We’re proud to share that surgeons at Piedmont Rockdale have completed more than 1,000 gynecological procedures using the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system.

Since acquiring the robot in 2022, our team has used it for procedures such as hysterectomies, myomectomies (fibroid removals), pelvic organ prolapse repairs, and endometriosis removals. The robot is also used for other minimally invasive surgeries like prostate removals and appendectomies.

“This technology allows us to address patients’ issues with incredible precision, leading to better outcomes and quicker recoveries. It can be lifechanging for patients,” said Timothy Cowthorn, D.O., obstetrician/gynecologist who performs robotic surgery at Piedmont Rockdale.

❤️ For 21 years, Stori Hall has been the one rushing in to save others. This year, he needed a lifesaving intervention of his own.

After developing heart failure following COVID‑19 in 2021, Stori’s condition worsened until he needed a heart transplant at age 45. He received dedicated care close to home from Dr. Rajeev Singh at Piedmont Heart of Rockdale, followed by a successful transplant in September performed by Dr. Ezequiel Molina at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital—one of the busiest heart transplant centers in the nation.

Today, Stori is recovering with a new heart and a renewed future. And soon, he hopes to return to the work that has defined his life for more than two decades: saving others. 💛 We’re honored to be part of his journey.

Last week, Piedmont Rockdale welcomed students from Rockdale Career Academy’s Certified Nursing Assistant class. Students practiced patient care skills like feeding, wheelchair assistance, and CPR. They toured the hospital’s Radiology Department and observed a CT scan. They also visited the Cath Lab and saw how blockages are removed from the heart and vascular system. Congratulations to Piedmont Rockdale’s pulmonary and surgical teams for completing 100 procedures using the ION robot! Each case represents a life touched by advanced lung cancer detection.

Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the leading cause of cancer death. The ION robot allows doctors to reach small lesions in all 18 segments of the lung through a minimally invasive procedure. These areas were difficult to reach with traditional biopsy methods, but doctors can now use the robot to diagnose lung cancer at earlier stages. Early diagnosis increases the chances for successful treatment.

This week, Piedmont Rockdale is especially grateful for our patients, staff, and community!

Last week, staff provided 89 Thanksgiving boxes filled with holiday staples to families from Pine Street Elementary School.

We also thank the East Suburban Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill, whose youth delivered gratitude cards for staff in Women’s Services and parents of premature babies in our NICU.

On Nov. 20, Piedmont Rockdale celebrated the Great American Smokeout with a special Rockdale Rockers event! Pulmonologist Shimool Rabbani, D.O., shared valuable insights on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung health. Community members enjoyed a hands-on cooking demonstration and learned creative, healthy ways to reuse Thanksgiving leftovers.

On November 7th, Piedmont Oncology opened a stand-alone Early Detection Pancreatic Cancer Clinic (EDC), the first of its kind in Georgia, at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. The EDC will provide accurate risk assessment for patients, improve awareness of pancreatic cancer, allow opportunities for potential research opportunities, and increase ease of access for referring clinicians and for patients. The EDC would not be possible without the generous contributions and commitments by philanthropic donors to the program.
