Patients value access to advanced screening. Adults ages 50-75 reported the following. 92% would want to know if they have cancer as early as possible so they could take action.

At Occupational Health Center, Dr. Toney Hudson is proud to offer the Galleri Multi-Cancer Early Detection screening. It takes just 2 weeks from the blood draw to get your results.

Some of the deadliest cancers for adults have no recommended screening. Aggressive cancers shed more DNA and are more likely to have a Cancer Signal Detected result.

As we continue to talk about cancer screenings, know there are just 5 on a schedule.

There are many dangerous cancers with no screenings.

This is why we are pleased to offer Galleri from Grail. It is a screening option for all of these cancers without screenings. It is a simple blood draw at our office.

False positives are RARE as Galleri has 99.5% specificity.

Did you know?
*Greater than 85% of new cancers occur in those 50 & over?
*You have a 6% average increase of risk of cancer with every year of age.
*The risk for cancer for people aged 65+is 2.5 times higher, on average, than those in the 50-64 age group.

The deadliest cancers for adults ages 65+ that have no recommended screening are: Pancreas, Liver, Leukemia, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Bladder, and O***y.

Galleri screening is recommended for use in adults with an elevated cancer risk, those 50 & older. People without symptoms can take the test.

We encourage you to reach out to us to discuss the Galleri test and have all your questions answered. Please contact Michael by calling 931.526.1604 or by emailing mdetwiler@occhealth.md

Catching cancer before you have symptoms.

The Galleri multi-cancer early detection test is a prescription-only blood test that screens for a signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer, many of which do not have recommended screening tests. It is intended to be used in addition to, not as a replacement for, existing standard cancer screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies.

The Galleri test screens for many aggressive and deadly cancers that currently lack recommended standard-of-care screening options.

The primary reason these other options do not exist is due to the nature and location of these cancers, and the lack of reliable, non-invasive screening methods proven to reduce mortality in the general population.

**Deadliest Cancers Screened by Galleri Without Standard Options**

The Galleri test is particularly notable because it can detect signals for cancers such as:

Pancreatic cancer:
One of the most lethal cancers, often with a very low five-year survival rate (around 8.3%), as it is usually detected at late stages (III or IV).

Ovarian cancer:
This cancer is also highly lethal because symptoms are non-specific and often appear only after the cancer has spread throughout the abdomen.

Liver/Bile duct cancer:
These cancers also lack standard screening and have low survival rates, though Galleri has a high sensitivity for them.

Others include:
Esophageal cancer, Stomach cancer along with head and neck cancers.

Understanding the profound impact cancer has had on our community, we want to directly inform you about a new, cutting-edge screening option designed to detect more than 50 types of cancer earlier.

We understand that cancer profoundly impacts almost every family, and you may have had a personal experience with the disease yourself.

Over the past six months, Dr. Hudson and his team have been dedicated to researching and implementing more effective ways to screen patients for cancer. We are pleased to announce that we will soon begin offering a new, comprehensive screening option.

We are implementing the Galleri multi-cancer early detection test, which screens for more than 50 different types of cancer. This is particularly significant because Galleri can detect many aggressive cancers that currently lack recommended standard-of-care screening options. The primary challenge for these other cancers has been their nature, location, and the absence of proven, non-invasive screening methods known to reduce mortality in the general population.

The Galleri test is specifically recommended for adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those aged 50 or older.

We encourage you to reach out to us to discuss the Galleri test and have all your questions answered. Please contact Michael by calling 931.526.1604 or by emailing mdetwiler@occhealth.md

September is fall prevention awareness month!!

Falls lead to half of all hospitalizations from traumatic brain injury. It affects all ages.

How can you prevent falls through lifestyle changes?

Stay physically active – Exercising and moving regularly strengthens your muscles and also helps to keep your body parts flexible, which will minimize the risk of both falling and being injured by a fall.

Get your sight and hearing regularly checked – Vision and hearing are essential in knowing what is going on around you. Any vision or hearing loss can greatly increase your risk of falling. Be sure to get your eyes and ears checked regularly by a healthcare professional.

Review the side effects of the medications that you take with your doctor – Some medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and other symptoms that increase your likelihood of falling.

Check your Vitamin D levels – A recent study found that a daily dose of vitamin D can reduce the risk of falls in older adults by 19%.

Wear appropriate footwear – Wearing shoes that are uncomfortable, don’t fit correctly, or that are not suitable for your environment greatly increases your chances of falling.

Evaluate your risk with a doctor – Some people are more prone to falling than others. Age, medication, and preexisting conditions are just some of the factors that can increase risk.

How can you prevent falls in the home?

Avoid uneven surfaces – Be aware of any places in your home where there is uneven flooring.

Install bars or railings – Adding supports to areas in your home where falls are common, such as stairs and bathtubs, can reduce the risk of falling and sustaining a brain injury.

Ensure you have adequate lighting – A simple way prevent falls in your home is to have ample lighting. Make sure that you have easily accessible light switches and bright light in all the rooms in your house.

Avoid using ladders and stepstools – Ladders and stepstools present opportunities for injury. If you are at particularly high risk of falling or can adapt a task, try to avoid using these items.

NATIONAL PEACH DAY
August 27 is National Peach Day on the National Day Calendar to celebrate one of summertime's most scrumptious fruits known as the peach! August is prime peach season in the U.S. and we want everyone to enjoy a few peaches, plus remember the hardworking peach growers who provide us with this delicious fruit.

Summertime brings plenty of opportunity to enjoy fresh fruits, especially a flavorful, juicy peach. Local farmers' markets and orchards are busy picking peaches to deliver to anxious peach lovers. Whether you enjoy a peach by itself or use your peaches for canning and baking, National Peach Day is here to encourage you to celebrate this wonderful food holiday.

Peaches are one of Dr. Hudson's favorite fruits.

Peaches offer several health benefits. They are low in calories and are a good source of vitamins, including vitamins A and C. They contain beta-carotene and flavonoids, which are beneficial for fighting heart disease and anti-inflammatory disease. Peaches also promote healthy skin and boost the immune system, too. In fact, peaches contain high amounts of antioxidants to help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Best of all, eating peaches is twice as good knowing you are promoting good overall health every time you take a bite!
