Wonderful Program
Students are typically shifting from learning TO READ to reading TO LEARN when they start 4th grade. About 85% of school curriculum (even math!) requires reading skills in order to learn the material. That's why its so important for kids to be on track in reading by 3rd grade. When they're not, they get left even further behind as they're expected to be able to read to learn new things.
More than half of the 3rd graders in our county were not on track in reading last year. :(
That's where Reading Bridge comes in. A trained volunteer mentor meets with 1-3rd graders once a week at the library for 8 weeks to help students practice phonics skills in a fun, supportive environment. The Winter/Spring sessions of Reading Bridge start next week and we still have a handful of spots for young readers who could use extra one on one support.
