I had a patient come in yesterday for smoking cessation, and during our conversation they shared something with me that was pretty surprising;
They told me they have diabetes and were told to completely avoid fruit.
While fruit does contain sugar, it's sugar content is natural and behaves differently in the body then processed sugar. Fruit contains nutrients and fiber which make its absorption rate slower than processed sugar. Additionally, there are antioxidants found in fruit that play a valuable role in repairing cellular damage often caused by the effects of smoking.
When portioned appropriately and paired with balanced meals, fruit can absolutely fit into a diabetes-friendly lifestyle.
If you’re navigating blood sugar concerns, smoking cessation, or both, there are ways to approach it that feel realistic and supportive.
