Fall is Fungus Season
With Florida’s warm, damp mornings, mushrooms and mold flourish in yards, parks, and gardens. Many dogs are naturally curious and may sniff or nibble these growths — which can be highly toxic and even life-threatening.

Common Toxic Types (with realistic images):
I’ll include photos of these key species for recognition:
• Amanita muscaria (Fly agaric): Bright red with white spots — extremely poisonous.
• Galerina marginata: Brown, wood-loving mushroom; deadly if ingested.
• Inocybe & Clitocybe species: Small tan mushrooms, cause drooling, vomiting, seizures.
• Moldy food or yard debris: Often grows on wet grass, mulch, or leftover fruit.

Symptoms of Ingestion:
• Vomiting and diarrhea
• Drooling or foaming at the mouth
• Lethargy or weakness
• Tremors or seizures
• Jaundice (yellowing gums/eyes)

What To Do if Your Dog Eats a Mushroom or Mold:
• Do not wait for symptoms. Call your veterinarian or an emergency hospital immediately.
• Try to take a photo of the mushroom or safely collect it for identification (wear gloves).
• Do not induce vomiting unless directed by a vet.
• Bring your pet to the nearest emergency hospital for evaluation.

Prevention Tips:
• Check your yard daily for mushrooms and remove them promptly.
• Avoid walking dogs in heavily wooded or damp grassy areas after rain.
• Keep pets away from compost piles and decaying vegetation.
