"My husband received a liver transplant because of a genetic condition. During the transplant surgery his platelets went to ZERO. It was the blood products he received that saved his life. Then 6 years later, he developed and died of pancreatic cancer. He received hundreds of blood products during those times. It is because of first-hand knowledge of how the blood products were instrumental in extending his life and improving his quality of life that I am a regular donor. My family is so appreciative of each donor!"

"I donate simply because it is the right thing to do. People get sick, get in accidents or are caught in situations beyond their control where they need blood to survive. I'm healthy, take care of myself and the only thing stopping me from donating is me. It is another way for me to minimize my self-centeredness and to remind me that I have my agency because of my community. "

Joe started donating platelets nearly a decade ago, when he saw the need for transfusions up close and personal. “I was trying to go back to Afghanistan, and they discovered cancer during the physical that I needed to deploy,” he said.

Joe underwent 7 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation. Before he could receive each treatment, doctors checked his platelet count to ensure his body was healthy enough to endure the treatment.

Though his own recovery was quick, Joe recognized that many cancer patients were not as fortunate and would require platelet transfusions to be healthy enough to continue their own treatment.
