Another taste test in the books for March! Worcester Central School students got to double up this month with two dips, a maple and sweet potato cream cheese dip and a honey ricotta dip served along with some honey grahams!

Both of these dips were sweet and delicious, the kids loved them! Everyone tried both, but the maple and sweet potato was favored a bit more than the honey ricotta.

For those who wanted to know how they could make this at home, the maple & sweet potato dip was adapted from the sweet potato frosting in this recipe, it doesn't even use powdered sugar! https://airtable.com/appBueNVEVyvcSgVj/shrErdSlmSp8TxmWR/tblyGcKFWW9qLtssY/viwaBkfVeb5QDh16q/recshZZIwU5gNTajm/fldmlAicjQQlL7wVT/atto58ltp7Mf9ge5T?blocks=bipJ6sduqKnwGXKpm
Today's dip version included cinnamon, and a little less cream cheese. So, try it out and see what kind of spin you would put on it!

What a "sweet" way to end the week, taste testing some locally made maple and honey! Students at Sharon Springs Central School got to try maple cotton candy and honey sticks! Thanks to Stone House Farm - Maple, Dairy, & Crops for bringing in your cotton candy machine and making fresh maple cotton candy for the kids! And thanks to Shorty's Enterprises LLC for providing the locally made honey sticks!

Everybody loved this month's harvest, but students preferred the maple just a little more than the honey. Although many did enjoy both options! 🍁🍯

Have a great weekend, we'll see you next time!

It was another winning taste test at Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School featuring one of our featured harvests this month, HONEY! Today students tried a honey & peanut butter yogurt and used it as a dip for some NY apple slices!

The kids thought it was great and I have to agree. Even on its own it was a great snack! It's supper easy to make if you want to try it at home!
6 oz vanilla yogurt
3 tsp peanut butter
3 tsp of raw honey
a dash of cinnamon

Mix it together and you've got a tasty treat! This would also be a great recipe to make some homemade frozen yogurt cups/popsicles in the summer!

🐝 What's your favorite way to use honey? 🍯

Another great day for Farm to School! Sharon Springs Central School students had to take a bite and guess what vegetable was added to these chocolate cookies!

Spoiler, it was beets! The kids were pretty excited to try these cookies, and for many of them, this was the first time they had ever tried beets! This is exactly why we have tastings, so students can try foods they've never had before!

And I would say today was a win. Beets can be a hard sell, but about 2/3 of the students said they were a fan of this recipe! πŸ˜„ If you want to try them at home you can find the recipe here! https://childhood101.com/easy-choc-beetroot-cookie-biscuit-recipe/ Thanks Melissa for making these, they were delicious! I'll see you next time to try some maple and honey!

It was a pretty sweet day for the students at Edmeston Central School! We celebrated the Harvest of the Month by trying out some maple cookies! 🍁

Today's cookies were a fan favorite with many requests for the recipe. Scroll through the photos to find it! This recipe is modified to fit school nutrition requirements, but if you want the original version, you can find it here: https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/maple-brown-sugar-cookies/ -recipes-74519 The original calls for maple extract, but I would suggest using pure NY maple syrup!

The syrup used today came from Ben & Judy's Sugarhouse right down the road in West Edmeston! We love using locally sourced products and supporting local producers! Thanks to all the maple producers and the work they are putting in this season and making it possible to enjoy maple products all year long!

We had double the treats and double the fun today at Gilbertsville - Mount Upton Central School District! Students got 2 samples today so that they could try both maple syrup and honey drizzled on top of vanilla ice cream!

I'm pretty sure this was their favorite tasting yet, with an almost unanimous vote for "tastes great". However, some of the elementary students like one and not the other, usually maple was the winner. But the middle and high school students were just big fans of both.

So, if you are looking for a simple yet delicious snack this month, try drizzling some honey or maple syrup on your ice cream, oatmeal, or even fruit to add a little sweetness to your day! See you next time!

We're back at it, tasting new foods! Students of Schenevus Central School District tried some oatmeal bake bites using our featured harvests Maple & Honey!

This easy and healthy snack was a hit with the kids, if you want to make them at home, here's how!

1 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup applesauce
2 tbsp maple syrup
2 tbsp honey
1 egg
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt

Mix everything together and scoop onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. To make bigger servings use a lined cupcake pan to make a more muffin style bite.
You could also change it up by adding some chocolate chips or dried cranberries!

Most of the ingredients used in today's tasting came from local producers, including NY oats and eggs from VanDewerker Farms Produce Stand, as well as local maple syrup from North Road Sugar Works in Jefferson and honey from Sweet Meadows in Davenport!

We tested everyone's taste buds today at Gilbertsville - Mount Upton Central School District. Did they figure out what vegetable we used to make these French fries?

We had a lot of guesses, good guesses, but only a few were able to identify the vegetable - beets! We used "golden beets" that are a bright yellow to make these fries. After chopping to size, they were tossed in oil, salt, and pepper, then baked at 425 F for 15-20 minutes until tender and a little crispy.

The kids were pretty split on whether or not they liked the beet fries, but I'm glad they tried them! I think these would be great with other kinds of seasoning too, maybe garlic, parmesan, or paprika. It's a great alternative to traditional French fries if you are looking for a healthier option or just want to change things up from time to time!

So, what do you think, would you try beet fries?

It's a taste test day! Elementary students at Cooperstown Central School District got to try out orange smoothies! It definitely was a hit; they loved it and wanted more!

If you like creamsicles, you will probably like this smoothie. Want to make it at home? You only need 3 ingredients:
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup canned mandarin oranges (drained)
1/2 cup milk
Put it all in a blender and blend until smooth! This recipe is for a single serving, so make sure you multiply to share with others!

Try it this way or swap for a different fruit! What flavors would you try? Let us know in the comments!

We gave the students at Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School something new to test their taste buds. But did it pass their inspection?

Today's tasting was a smoothie made with blueberries, strawberries, peaches, pears, bananas, and some lemonade to thin it out. We let the kids try to identify the flavor of the last ingredient, which was fresh beets! The beets were cooked beforehand to break down that tough texture of raw beets and make them perfect for blending with lots of fruit!

It turns out that most of these students would absolutely have this smoothie again! It's not too sweet, loaded with nutrients and it's even dairy free! Although you could definitely make a version of this that includes yogurt and/or milk.

Lunch time at a school is usually pretty hectic and today was no exception. My hands were so busy handing out smoothies and some new prizes for trying them (scented stickers and bookmarks), that I didn't get many picture pictures of today. But I assure you there were lots of purple stained faces and smiles! 😁 See you next time!

We've got a new harvest, so we are trying new things! We got to have a little fun with the students of Schenevus Central School District by having them guess the secret ingredient in today's tasting. And the answer is...BEETS! 🫜

We had a Berry & Beet smoothie, made with strawberries, blueberries, yogurt, milk, honey, and of course beets. The kids had a wide range of guesses for the secret ingredient, from dragon fruit and chia seeds to spinach and kale. But we did have some who got it right!

And even more importantly they liked it! So, if you don't usually care for beets, try adding them to a smoothie. It's a great way to still get the nutrients while changing up the flavor!

Happy February! Here's a Fun Fact to start it off and introduce this month's harvest - Beets! 🫜

When we talk about beets, you probably think of a dark reddish-purple color that we most commonly see in the grocery store. But there are also varieties that are yellow, white, red, or even have white and red stripes on the inside like a candy cane!

Beets can also vary in size and shape. Ranging from the size of a marble to a baseball, and coming in round, oval, tapered, long, or flat shapes!

Follow along to learn more fun facts and to see what recipes we try with the kids!
