The beauty and discipline of Ashtanga Yoga

Let's see what our unlikely duo are up to today.
Lorelyn is in her early senior years and Andrew is in his early 30's yet these two dedicated students are enjoying their continued commitment to the practice and enjoying each other's company.

This 2nd series pose is done deep within the Ashtanga practice. These two have already done about an hour of warm up poses, standing and seated poses to be ready for more advanced postures such as this.

This is a deep seated twist that comes after much preparation for backbends.

There is a spinal twist, a half Lotus of one leg and the drawing back of the other.
The emphasis is on the twisting.
We create length by engaging opposing forces.
Pull with the hand that's behind the back and push with the other.
Then sit up tall.
Extending from the base of the spine through the top of the head.
This is meant to bring the spine back to neutral after backbending.

Please notice the variations for students whose knees don't support a Lotus pose..

Calming, Balancing and Stimulating:
Urdhva Padmasana (Upward Lotus Pose) calms the nervous system with the energy points being activated or stimulated.
The signals received by the brain are also calming, that is further sent to the rest of the body.
Hence, even the breathing slowly becomes calm and relaxed.

Opens hip and thigh
Hamstring stretch

Benefits:
Stretches hamstrings, hips, and lower back.
Strengthens back and core muscles.
Improves digestion.
Can calm the mind.
May help with sciatica, piriformis syndrome, and plantar fasciitis.
May help with menstrual cramps.
May help with flat feet.
Is considered an advanced pose.
