Happy New Year's Eve! Starting a fresh year can feel like the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and make a change for your health and wellness. If your New Year resolution is to quit to***co products, we want you to know support is available. Here's why making this change is worth it:

🚭 Within 12 hours of quitting, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
🚭 Within 2 to 12 weeks, your circulation improves and your lung function increases.
🚭 Within one year, your risk of coronary heart disease is about half that of a smoker's.
🚭 Within 10 years, your risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker.

Talk with your primary care practitioner about the right ni****ne replacement therapies for you. It's been found that ni****ne gum, patches, inhalers, or medications, when combined with cessation counseling, are the most effective path to success. Good nutrition is an important part of our overall wellness, which is why many people choose to make eating healthier a New Year's resolution. Are you trying to change your habits around food? Here are some tips:

🍎 Start by focusing on adding healthy foods rather than restricting unhealthy ones. Introduce one manageable change at a time.

🥦 Eat slowly and without distractions. This mindfulness can help you pay better attention to when your body is full.

🍗 Be mindful of your portion sizes. Using smaller plates or bowls can help you eat less.

Nutrition counseling is offered at Bassett's health centers in Oneonta, Herkimer, Hartwick Seminary, and Cooperstown. Click here for more information: https://www.bassett.org/services/health-wellness/nutrition

There are only a few days left in 2025. Are you considering limiting your alcohol intake in the 2026? We're posting about a different potential New Year's resolution each day leading up January 1. Drinking too much alcohol can raise your risk of injury, accident, disease, and other health problems. Here's how you can start being more mindful of your consumption:

🍷Pace yourself by sipping slowly. Consider drinking a glass of water after each alcoholic drink as a way of slowing yourself down.

🍺Avoid triggers. If there's a place or activity that tempts you to drink, consider limiting when you go there or take part.

🍸Never drink and drive. People who are pregnant and people taking certain medications shouldn't drink at all.

If you believe you may have a problem with drinking, there are local and national resources available to provide help and support. As always, our primary care practitioners are ready to listen with open ears.

In the lead up to 2026, we are sharing information on some common New Year's resolutions and strategies for success! First up, some people strive to get better sleep - which can have wide-reaching health benefits. Here are some tips!

💤 Set a schedule and try your best to stick with it. This can regulate your internal clock, making it easier for you to fall and stay asleep.

💤Make sure your bed and bedroom are comfortable. Use blackout curtains or ear plugs if you have to sleep during a time when it isn't dark or your home isn't quiet.

💤 Stop using electronic devices at least an hour before you plan to go to bed. Blue light from screens can potentially interfere with sleep.

If you are concerned you may have sleep apnea or another sleep disorder, our sleep labs in Oneonta and Cobleskill are ready to help! Click here for more information: https://www.bassett.org/services/sleep-disorders-center
