It was 48 degrees this morning when we decided to have a Hawaiian Luau at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND!
Grass skirts, coconut bras, and leis were our traditional ensembles! The photos will show you all that! But...
The real action happens in the videos that will be posted in comments!
They take a bit to load so be sure to check back!
We had chair hula dancing lessons on YouTube teaching us the most popular interpretations of each, symbolic move!
We carried the theme all the way through the day!
We put beach umbrellas in the resident's drinks at lunch! Geepers! They loved that! It really is those little touches that are so affecting!
At coffee shop we served fruit pizza with pineapple and berries! We didn't stop there! We cut up watermelon and ended up eating that whole, big thing!
We learned Hawaiian greetings and after that, Delores J. made sure we all knew that Hawaiians love their SPAM!
You all may have thought you have seen everything in life ... but until you've witnessed the joy and beauty of residents doing interpretive hula dancing...Uffda!
Mercy! What a beautiful vision! We did coconut bowling and then we experienced our version of deep sea fishing for tropical fish using Donna E's snatcher up tool!
Remember to watch the videos!
🌸Aloha! 🌺 Hula

Some of the best days at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND involve BABIES!
Our Dietary Manager Megan Moore-Schemionek brought Baby Mikey in.
The rest just happened organically!
The place turned into a sound tunnel of, "Ooooo's" and "Awwwww's" and people grabbing their hearts like they do when they really love the vision in front of them! Others just reached out to be the next to hold him!
Mikey became the person-centered activity!
Alice is an obvious *baby whisperer! *
And Mikey is the receiver of a whole lot of love from residents and staff!
All in favor of a monthly activity on the calendar called, "Milkshakes & Mikey"-raise your hands❗🙌
Thank you for letting us watch him grow right before our very eyes Megan!

Today... Something bigger than all of us happened at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND.
We planned a stealth surprise for our 5 Veterans who chose GCCC as home.
Clarence Sandvik, John Bauck, George Johnston, Jerry Ronningen and Orville Ramsey were honored as part of the Freedom Fighters Run!
Let the photos tell the story and please view the videos in comments while we all attempt to dry our eyes!
GCCC is so proud of our Veterans and staff! 🇺🇸
God bless all the riders who cared about us today!

Pssst! If you are in Cooperstown today you may want to watch out for 50 to 100 motorcycles pulling into the Griggs County Care Center to honor five of our veterans during their Freedom ride!
So far - they plan to be pulling in between 1:15 and 1:30 p.m. (give or take!)
This will be a quick but powerful stop and we feel so blessed that this gets to happen!
Note: Do Not ⚠️ plan to park in front of the Care Center to watch because that is where all of the bikes will be parking. Consider parking on the Frontage Road.
We honor, celebrate and love our Veterans at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND! 🇺🇸
We have a Marine, two from the US Army and two Navy men!
We are caring about all the riders today too!
May the wind blow upon your backs and a hedge of protection follow you from above and below, from side to side and a dome all around!

🤣😂Betty, Alice, Berthal, Delores J., Dale, Marge, Jodi Rae, Jacen and Nadine got together for an impromptu game of Velcro Battle Ball! We played for just over a half hour.
We learned that Betty is very competitive and that Marge was given faulty equipment.
Delores J. has beautiful form when catching!
Alice needs an agent to sign on with a team and Nadine is a natural! Berthal made a great pitcher!
Dale was a great sport!
Jacen and Jodi Rae truly got their exercise chasing all the fowl balls! They both claim to be thankful they got chosen to work in a place that offers you a free gym membership without even knowing it! 🙌
But mostly during this time, we just had a whole bunch of time to laugh, concentrate and compete in fun!
Here's a sped up snippet of Velcro Battle Ball!
Wanna challenge us with your Battle Ball team?

Sometimes the most beautiful love stories aren’t between couples at all—they’re between friends.
At Griggs County Care Center, we get to witness friendship in its purest form. Two gentlemen here have quietly written their own story of loyalty and care. One of them struggles with vision, and the other has become his steady set of eyes, especially during Bingo. He not only tends to his own card, but makes sure his friend’s card is marked as well. And here’s the extraordinary part- no matter what he wins, he always passes his prizes to his buddy—without hesitation, without fanfare, without a second thought.
Yesterday, his lucky streak reached new heights. He hit the big blackout prize!
You know, the one everyone waits for, the one that makes the room buzz with excitement. And what did he do? He slid every bit of his Bingo loot over to his best friend, as naturally as breathing.
When we think of friendship, we often picture women linking arms, sharing secrets, or holding hands. But right here, from our mouth to God’s ears, male friendships are alive, strong, and sacred. Two men, sitting side by side at Bingo proving that real friendship isn’t about what you win for yourself—it’s about what you give away.
In the end, love isn’t measured in roses or rings, but in Bingo chips and quiet sacrifices. And to us.. That is holy ground!
Jerry and David are living proof of loyalty, empathy, compassion and care!

At GCCC the morning began,
With “Sorry” played hand to hand.
Game pieces slid, some cheers, some sighs,
While care conferences opened our eyes.

We spoke of those we love so dear,
Their stories, their smiles, their voices we hear.
Two birthdays today - nothing could go wrong!
Grace the caregiver we celebrated with song!

And sweet Dolores J, ohhh what a sight—
Over ninety years young and still shining bright!

The golf cart rolled with laughter and cheer,
Before coming home for snacks and root beer!

Judy and Ardis played BINGO hosts with flair,
While cake was being sliced and served everywhere!
Then the towel folders, oh what a crew,
They folded and fluffed as they always do.

Some munched on cukes in their rooms —fresh and green,
While others chose chocolate—sweet and serene.
Prizes of chips and goodies galore,
Laughter and joy spilled out every door.

And when supper came, oh what a scene—
Barbecue chicken fit for kings and queens!
Fingers were licked, no shame in sight,
Everyone feasted with pure delight.

At GCCC we laugh, play, and pray,
And celebrate love in the simplest ways.
So here’s to birthdays, Grace and Dolores too,
May joy wrap around each year- making excitement brand new!

For life is a party, and you are the sparks—
At GCCC you’ve left such bright marks!
So raise up your forks, cake, and good cheer,
To Grace and Dolores—we’re so glad you’re here!
One brings the care, the other the glow,
Together you make our happiness grow!
Roland and Delores sealed the celebration with a kiss..
Goodnight all of our Friends!
We pray you sleep in pure bliss!

Monday was a Fun day from the very beginning at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND.... And all because we bought one giant, foam die.
Residents with diseases of the brain need joyful stimulation. We took the die on a cart with other sensory rich items.
We handed the die to a resident and let them experience the feeling of its soft, squishiness. We then encouraged them to throw it.
Just the act of throwing was worth the celebration but as the die landed on whatever number it landed on , the staff became , extremely, dramatically enthusiastic! For instance, one resident threw the die and it landed on the number
2.
We yelled, “Oh my goodness! You did it! How did you roll the winning number on your first try? Wow! 🙌 Pick a prize! " Other staff were in the background hooting and hollering in glee! So many residents became animated and fullfilled. The thing about it was-so did the staff! The enthusiasm was so contagious that staff asked if they could try not realizing that any number that they rolled would be the winning number! 😂 We didn't have the camera to get actual photos but this is the die we bought.
The fun didn't stop there! We had been planning a men's only trip (with Jodi Rae, the female driver) and went room to room asking every gentleman if they would like to go on an adventure. A few of them were eager to get out.
We mounted the blue van and gallupped across the prairie and down to the Cooperstown Bible Camp. So many memories and stories from that place were conjured.
Next we toured David Lunde's magnificent farm! What a property. We all dreamed of what it would be like to live there, (or even just enjoy a picnic in the gorgeous back yard!) We were sad David wasn't with us to be our tour guide!
From there we meandered through the rolling hills mesmerized by the valley views.
The fellas got to see some of the storm damage from the last few weeks and months.
We took the Luverne Road critiquing the lush crops before we decided to eat lunch at Dirty Johnny's! We were treated like royalty and the guys got portions fit for kings! After all.. They are just that!
We loaded back up and headed over to visit the whimsical lake village of Sibley, ND on beautiful Lake Ashtabula!
We did more crop watching on the road home, we stopped to rescue a turtle that had wandered onto the road and returned home right in time for coffee shop hour and desert!
We made homemade cherry or lemonade slushes to go with the cheesecake crumble bars and coffee!
Towel folding and card games ensued!
Tomorrow night, the residents look forward to *Happy Hour*! Wine coolers, whisky and beer!
Monday-Fun day!
Tuesday-Repeat❗

A day for the ladies to adventure is coming up soon too!

Person-centered care.. It's one of the things we are really great at here!
Instead of doing large group activities day after day-we focus on what's important to individuals. If a resident enjoys listening to rock and roll music in the dark-we help that to happen. If a resident enjoys having a glass of wine at 4:00 p.m. everyday and it has been cleared by the doctor then that resident gets a glass of wine at 4:00 p.m. everyday.
Today we planned a golf cart riding day but the morning weather was wonky. So we made the day entirely person-centered.
One resident is especially patriotic so we started a new group. It's the, “I pledge allegiance to the flag group. "
Patriotic residents who were up early congregated at the front windows looking out at our beautiful flag! Oh gosh was it waving in the wind! The gentleman, a proud US Veteran, led us.
Right after that we noticed a few residents who wanted to do more but they didn't know what. We took a pool noodle, an corrigated egg carton and an old cottage cheese tub and played individual games of, "Knock it off, win a prize!" 😂 Staff were not injured in this new game! We promise!
With the weather still GLOOMY, we took out the parachute, sat in a circle and grabbed on! We flew it high in the sky and whipped it down to the ground. To make it more intriguing, we added a ball in the center!
We were having so much fun that we forgot to get photos. Staff surprised the parachuting residents by running underneath it at just the right time! A good time was had by all because how can you not have a good time when laughter and energy are colliding everywhere?
It was soon time for lunch so residents were coming out to visit in anticipation of the great meal. We put on the upbeat song of old, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. "
We like to begin any activity by figuring out what the month, day and year is. Once we all agreed that it was Saturday, August 16th, 2025- so we started exercising to the best music! We concentrated on every part of our body and especially loved when we did shoulder moves to the beat!
Because almost every resident is of faith, we like to pray together prior to the meal. A loud "Aaaa-men" could be heard up every hallway!
And wouldn't you know it! During lunch the sun came out and so we began our golf cart rides around this beautiful city just after.
One resident asked if she could buy everyone on the trip an ice cream bar from the gas station. We sat outside the station, in the cart, and had the most precious discussion group! Patrons greeted us and three semis lovingly honked their horns at us! One of the men on the cart with us who isn't usually much of a talker became our "point it out man"! He pointed out beautiful gardens and big equipment and other things that he thought we might miss as we zoomed slowly by. But our ride couldn't last long because we had to rush home to enjoy coffee shop together. Today's snack... Homemade chocolate chip cookies! We love having visitors at this hour! Elsa and Arden were here from Bismarck visiting, asking questions to get new conversations going and being active listeners while they did! The residents and staff adore them!
And as the clock struck 3:00 p.m. - the towel folding group had already began co-mingling alerting staff that it was time to put the tables up and get them disinfected so they could do this duty that they love doing~ together.
Next, the group who enjoy playing cards together did just that while others watched their favorite western on TV.
This was not an abnormally good day at GCCC. We do this often. What we don't talk about enough are the one-on-one , in room, person-centered visits that go on all throughout the day with not just the joyology staff but the nursing staff, maintenance staff, business staff and dietary and laundry staffs all filling moments in individual hearts. Some residents may not wish to attend groups or go places. So we get to know them and do what they love to do, when they want to do it and where they are at. This is love.
GCCC is surely elevated in that skill!♥️
Today was purely awesome~AGAIN! Look in comments for the video of the Pledge! 🇺🇸
And oh! Did you hear about the remarkable results of our State Health Department survey from last week? Gosh are we proud of our Administrator, staff and each other!
Happy Weekend Friends of GCCC!

Today’s Coffee Shop Hour at Griggs County Care Center took a wild turn — we swapped our usual Norwegian Penicillin (a.k.a. coffee) that cures everything from bunions to bad moods- for Strawberry Banana Boba Smoothies.
If you’ve never had boba, it’s basically little tapioca pearls that hide in your drink until you slurp them up through an extra wide straw … and then boom — tiny flavor bombs explode in your mouth!! It feels dangerous yet intriguingly exciting!

Resident reviews:

"It's kinda like drinking soft marbles, but it's real tasty!”

“Scared me little when they popped, but I liked it.”

“This is made with real fruit so it's healthy for me! “

“Needs rum. No tequila. Aww heck! Vodka will do! Got any?"
And our favorite review-
"Bobas made me giggle a little! They pop in my mouth! Ha!"

They loved it so much we’re already planning on ordering new boba flavors. And who knows… maybe Happy Hour boba is next!?
Do you love boba? What's you favorite flavor?
We're ordering in strawberry lemonade boba next!
We are all agreeing to try new things and review them so you can have our opinions before you try!
Today was BOBALICIOUS!

If you think life slows down after 78, you clearly have not spent a Monday in the Activities Department here in Cooperstown, North Dakota.
First off—today was Cheryl’s birthday! We sang "Happy Birthday Dear Cheryl" in more keys than a locksmith’s keyring. It may not have been in tune, but it was in LOVE—and that’s the only pitch that matters. 💖 We ended up singing it 4 times throughout the day!
Then came the highlight activity of the day …
"You are never too old to play in the sand" was the name of the activity. Don't think for a moment there isn't great benefit to people our age digging in the sand! Many memories were shared of themselves, their children or grandchildren playing in the sand! And since the beach wasn’t available, we brought the beach to them—100 pounds of play sand right in the activity room! Before long, we had castles on mountains surrounded by moats, streets and sidewalks, and enough sand on the floor to likely make our custodian question all his life choices. Imaginations were brilliant! We laughed, we dug, we created, and we held conversations that only happen when your hands are in cool, damp sand. (We also discovered that sand travels—some of us may be carrying a little home in our shoes and hair.) What a splendid sensory activity to boot! Our hands got pampered and exfoliated! We knocked all of our castles down creating an even bigger, funnier mess! That's what brooms and dustpans are for!
After lunch, it was *Special Bingo* with our beloved guest callers Judy and Ardis. All the prizes were edible—because, really, what else matters more than snacks? The blackout winner went home with a whole bag of yumminess that looked like it could cause both joy and a sugar coma.
And we weren’t done yet! The famous Towel Folding Gang gathered its loyal congregation, followed by a few rowdy rounds of Crazy 8 before supper!
Here’s the truth—getting dirty and having fun at ages 78 to 101 is a whole lot better than it was when we were five or six. Back then, we had to answer to our mothers. Now? We just blame it on “therapeutic recreation” and keep right on digging.
Today was full of sand, sugar, and laughter—and that’s exactly how we like it!
Tomorrow - we bake and eat brownies and spend the afternoon outside while we still can!
Thank you to caregiver GRACE for jazzing Cheryl up in a sash and crown for her Birthday!

We don't know what you're having for supper...
All the staff worked together to make a special surprise happen for those residents who wanted to partake. We had a sign- up to announce it.
The menu... Venison burgers with all the fixin!'s!
What a treat!
Oh was it a hit!
Our dietary department does everything they can to bring meals that keep 39 different taste buds begging for more. That's hard to do!
Tonight they were victorious! Thank you Megan Moore-Schemionek and your super duper dietary team!
What did you all have for supper?
