🚨New guidelines for Blood pressure management!!! BP 140/90 during pregnancy on more than one occasion is considered elevated and requires treatment and can reduce the risk of developing complications like preeclampsia.

COMMUNITY BIRTH OUTCOMES VARY. When people think about home birth, birth centers and midwives, they sometimes assume that the outcomes are the same across the board. But outcomes for the birthing person and baby vary depending on the health of the person, whether there are complications in the pregnancy, whether the birth is attended by a midwife or unassisted, the training and practices of the midwife attending the birth, and the availability of smooth and safe transfer to the hospital if needed. In Oregon, birth certificate data lets us look at outcomes for planned community births by provider type, including unassisted births and births that involved a hospital transfer. Since we’re the only state that collects this information, we want to share it with birthing families and midwives to support decision-making.

One thing that stands out in this data is that the risk of a baby dying around the time of birth in a planned community birth is low with licensed midwives but it’s higher with traditional midwives and even higher in planned unassisted births. This population-level data can’t tell us the causes of these differences but they do show that there is more to the safety of community birth than just location.

We encourage people to research their birth options and ask any midwife they are thinking about hiring questions about their training, experience, preparation for emergency situations, and relationships with local hospitals. If you are planning to work with an unlicensed or traditional midwife or birthkeeper, asking questions and getting recommendations from other birthing families can be even more important since there is no other verification of their training and no regulation of their practice. You can find a list of questions to ask and more information about birth options and types of midwives here: https://oregonmidwiferycouncil.org/how-to-find-a-midwife/

Two photos from a beautiful birth ❤️ it was an absolute honor to support this family through their birth to bring their newest addition into the world.

I have ONE opening in June/early July for a doula and photography client. What my package includes:

-1 prenatal visit around 36 weeks to discuss birth plan/options
-On-call 24/7 starting at 38 weeks
-Come to your home in early labor to help with positioning of the baby and support you
-Go to the hospital with you and your partner (or wherever you plan on delivering)
-Stay 1-2 hours after the baby is born
-While all of this is happening, I am photographing the experience for you and your partner AND the precious moments right after your baby has arrived
-2 postpartum visits to go over the birth, offer support and resources as needed

Big studies out of Oregon about water birth 😍

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University researchers have conducted the largest study of water births to date and found they were associated with better overall outcomes than non-water births. Water births had a lower risk of several maternal and neonatal outcomes, including postpartum hemorrhage...

In the state of Washington, a planned home birth with a licensed midwife is just as safe as a birth at a licensed birth centre.

THIS ☝🏻
I always say I’m a doula for the mom AND partner. I stepped back and let him take the lead to support his wife throughout her (fast!) labor and capture moments just like this.
Congratulations again friend on a beautiful delivery ♥️

Just in case you need some reasons to support midwifery care in Oregon, here are a few fun facts:

In 2019 (most recent data from Oregon Health Authority)....
-Midwives in Oregon attended the births of 25.2% OF ALL NEWBORNS in Oregon! That equaled 10,337 vaginal births. Of those births, 14% were at home or a birth center. Pregnant people are choosing midwives!
-Midwives reported cesarean section rates between 5% and 14%. The National average is 30% and the 2020 Healthy People target is 24%.
-Newborns had lower rates of assisted ventilation and neonatal intensive care admissions when born into the hands of midwives in Oregon.
-There were 518 licensed midwives in Oregon (388 CNMs, 98 LDMs, 32 NDs), and they attended births in all but 4 counties in Oregon.

Why is midwifery care so great?
-Midwives attend births at home, in birth centers and in hospitals.
-Many midwives spend a full hour with clients for prenatal and postpartum visits. This leaves time for highly individualized care in which they tend to both physical and emotional needs of their clients.
-Midwives support and respect their clients' decisions. They highly value informed choice in medical decisions and provide evidence based care.
-Preliminary data shows that midwifery care reduces the racial disparities in maternal health outcomes. This is HUGE. And, a great reason to donate to OMF's BIPOC grant to support midwives of color https://oregonmidwiferyfoundation.org/current-projects/bipoc-grant/
