Follow the 4 steps below to treat diaper rash:
1) Change soiled or wet diapers frequently. Stool and urine are frequent irritants to stool.
2) Gently cleanse the diaper area. Avoid aggressive wiping and use of scented wipes.
3) Let skin air dry.
4) Apply thick barrier ointment. Use a product that has petrolatum or zinc oxide as base ingredient. Remember to apply thick layer with each diaper change.

Please reach out to your pediatrician if no improvement within 2-3 days, or if any worsening rash is noted.

Education
Dr. Shumate earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond, Oklahoma. She attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and graduated in 2014. She completed her Pediatrics Residency at The Children’s Hospital of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City from 2014 to 2017. She is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

History with MD Pediatric Associates
Dr. Shumate joined our team in 2017. She provides well-child, acute care, and mental health appointments at the Coppell Office. As of November 2024, Dr. Shumate’s new patient panel is closed except to newborns. Please feel free to schedule with one of our other wonderful Coppell pediatric providers!

Why Pediatrics?
“When I was 6 years old, my class took a field trip to our local hospital for a ‘Teddy Bear Clinic’ where the nurses and doctors helped us patch up our favorite stuffed animals. I was sold on the whole event – the hospital, taking care of others, learning about science. As I grew older, I continued to love the science of medicine and working with kids. My patients in residency were the ultimate confirmation that I loved pediatrics. I am passionate about caring for the most precious and vulnerable members of our society, and I am truly blessed to be living my childhood dream.”

Fun Facts
Dr. Shumate resides in Coppell with her husband Riley and their son and two daughters. She has lived in various places but still identifies as a Georgia Peach at heart. Her favorite thing to do is spend time with her husband and quickly-growing children. Other hobbies include basketball, coffee-drinking, and classical piano.

With annual STAAR testing 📚 in April & May, we wanted to encourage our students with a few helpful tips:

🧠 Get a good night’s sleep
Rested brains think better! Aim for an early bedtime!
🥞 Don’t skip breakfast
Fuel up with protein + healthy carbs for sustained energy.
🎒 Be prepared
Lay out clothes, pack snacks, and arrive on time to avoid stress.
💧 Hydrate
Water helps with focus and prevents fatigue.
💬 Encourage, don’t pressure
A calm, positive mindset goes a long way! Remind them to just do their best!
🧘‍♀️ Practice calm breathing
If they feel nervous, slow deep breaths can help reset their focus.
✏️ Take your time & read carefully
Remind them it’s okay to go slow and double-check their work.
