Are You Brushing Too Hard? Hereโs Why It Matters
Many of us are guilty of using a heavy hand when we brush our teethโbut did you know that brushing too hard can actually damage your teeth and gums over time?
One of the most common effects is gum recession. When too much pressure is used, your gums gradually wear away, exposing the root surfaces of your teeth.
Above the gum line, your teeth are protected by enamelโthe hardest substance in the human body, made up of 97% minerals. But below the gum line? The root is covered in cementum, which is only about 40% mineralizedโso itโs much softer and more vulnerable to damage.
Over time, aggressive brushing can wear away this cementum, leading to abfractionsโsmall notches at the gum line that can cause:
โข Tooth sensitivity (especially to cold)
โข Increased risk of cavities
โข Food trapping
โข A darkened appearance
Abfractions can often be repaired with a tooth-colored filling, but in more serious cases, a crown or even gum grafting surgery might be needed.
So, how do you know if youโre brushing too hard?
Check your toothbrush after 2โ3 months. Are the bristles still straight and intact, or are they flared out and smushed?
If your brush looks โworn outโ way before itโs due for replacement, chances are youโre brushing too hard.
Our tips for gentler brushing:
โข Always use a soft or extra-soft toothbrush (save the hard bristles for scrubbing grout!)
โข Replace your brush every 3 months
โข Consider switching to an electric toothbrush like the Sonicareโit does the work for you and is much gentler on your gums
