Did you know that we are not the only species to use plants as medicine? Here is the original study published in Nature of "Rakus" the Orangutan in Sumatra who observers noted using Fibraurea tinctoria leaves topically to treat his facial wound. This is not a commonly eaten plant species by Orangutans and subsequent studies have found it to contain alkaloids that have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and analgesic components. Observers followed and documented the entire healing process and this wound healed quickly with no infection. Pretty cool!
