It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. John C. Nordt III on March 31, 2026.

Dr. Nordt was not just the founder of the Spine Center of Miami; he was a pillar of the South Florida medical community and a fiercely dedicated advocate for his patients. Throughout his long and distinguished career as a complex orthopedic spine surgeon, he lived strictly by the Hippocratic Oath. He famously reminded us all that “Pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis,” always taking the time to truly listen to his patients and fighting to protect the doctor-patient relationship above all else.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Nordt was a true Renaissance man—a lifelong resident of Coconut Grove, an avid aviator who restored his beloved 1942 Ryan PT-22, a brilliant historian, a former president of the Florida Orthopedic Society, and above all, a man of uncompromising character who loved his family, his staff, and his friends deeply.

He will be missed beyond measure by his devoted staff, his colleagues, and the countless patients whose lives he changed.

A Memorial Service will be held to honor his incredible life and legacy:
🗓️ Sunday, April 19
⏰ 1:30 p.m.
📍 Plymouth Congregational Church, Coconut Grove, FL

Please keep his family and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time. 🤍🕊️

Has Surgery Become a Business?

This was one of the hard questions Dr. Nordt was willing to ask directly.

He believed patients were too often rushed, not fully heard, and pushed toward treatment before the full problem was truly understood. He cared deeply about physician judgment, honest diagnosis, and protecting the patient-doctor relationship.

Sharing his voice because these questions still matter.

Dr. Nordt was incredibly passionate about Tiger Woods’ case because he saw it as a powerful example of how complex spine pain can be — and how important it is to fully understand the problem before moving toward repeated surgery. His belief was always the same: patients deserve careful evaluation, honest thinking, and treatment based on the full picture.

In healthcare, the real question should never be income.

It should be outcome.

Dr. Nordt puts it simply: when income takes priority over outcome, patients are the ones who suffer.

Every patient deserves thoughtful, appropriate care—not decisions driven by money.

A patient came in being worked up for major spine surgery. Dr. Nordt examined him and believed the real problem was not his back — it was his hip.

He got the correct treatment and avoided an unnecessary operation that could have changed the rest of his life.

This is why judgment matters.
